Hello! Mother’s Day is around the corner and if you are looking for an easy gift to make to go with a book gift, here is a fast and easy bookmark you can make for your Mom or any friend! I wanted to make a bookmark that sits flat in the book, so this would require minimal sewing and turning out of the fabric. SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener is a perfect for this project. It gives the fabric a paper like feel and you can still sew with it. I also found it fun and easy to embroider with as well once applied.

Easy Bookmark Instructions

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Two cotton pieces – scraps work great for this project
  • SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener
  • Pressing Paper
  • Ribbon or tassel
  • Embroidery floss – Optional
  • Erasable marking pen – if you are going to embroider
  • Paintbrush and small container

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Iron – I love Oliso!

CUTTING:

  • Cut two 2 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ cotton rectangles – for front and back of bookmark

TIPS:

  • Follow the instructions for the SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener.
  • Use the Pressing Paper when ironing and when administering the fabric stiffener and follow the instructions on how to use.

Let’s Begin!

  1. Prep the front and back cotton rectangle pieces. Spray some SprayNBond Stiffener into a container. Follow the instructions provided on the bottle on how to apply and use. Using a paintbrush, apply the stiffener onto the fabric pieces.
  2. Using pressing paper, sandwich one piece between two pressing paper pieces. Iron as instructed (from instructions) until the piece is stiff. Take the piece off of the pressing paper and air dry for a few minutes. Repeat for the second piece.

SpraynBond Fabric Stiffener makes the fabric stiff, yet it allows you to sew and embroider with.
  3. Optional – if you want to embroider a sweet name such as – Mama – using an erasable pen, write directly onto the desired area of the bookmark. Once done, embroider the written area.
  4. Assemble the bookmark. Take the two rectangle pieces and with wrong sides facing in (front sides out), place them together. If you are adding ribbon, apply in between each piece at this point. Clip in place and sew around the entire piece. If you are adding a tassel, punch a hole on the top middle of the bookmark and thread your tassel through the hole.

You are now done! You can use this method to make bookmarks using wide lace as well. It makes a lovely easy gift to sew. Enjoy!
