School for us is right around the corner. Yes, summer vacation has come to an end and school supply shopping is upon us. Trying to find all the supplies can be quite daunting, not to mention that the kiddos sometimes dislike the choices that are on the shelf. So, why not make them a little something special for that first day of school, like a sweet pencil bag that can go into a binder.
Back to School in Style Pencil Bag
Personalizing a project like this can be quite simple by using HeatnBond® EZ Print Inkjet Transfer Sheets. You will need to find an image to print off onto one of the sheets. This can be a quote or a picture that you had taken over summer vacation. If you chose to do writing make sure that you reverse the image.
Project Supplies:
3 fat quarters of various prints
1 – 5″ x 6 1/2″ solid color piece of fabric
1 – HeatnBond® EZ Print Inkjet Transfer Sheets
1 – 9″ zipper
1 – 8 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece of HeatnBond® Non-Woven Craft Fusible Extra Firm
1 – piece of 2 1/2″ x WOF fabric for binding
1 – 8 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece of fabric for pencil case back
Project Instructions:
For this project, your image needs to print out 4 1/2″ tall by 6″ wide. Print your image.
Iron you image onto a piece of fabric.
Cut around it leaving 1/4″ seam allowance. The total size will be 5″ x 6 1/2″. Leave the paper sheet covering the image. Cut your fabric to the graphic below.
For the lining, you will need a 7 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ , 1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″, and a 8 1/2″ x 10 1/2″.
For the front, sew your side fabrics on first, then top and bottom.
With right side together, layer your zipper face forward to the front of your case, then your 7 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece of lining. Sew the layers together. Iron flat. Top stitch next to the zipper.
On the other side of the zipper, layer your 1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ front fabric(right side), the zipper front, then your lining fabric right side to wrong side of front. Sew, then press. Top stitch next to zipper.
Iron your 8 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ piece of HeatnBond Non-Woven Craft Fusible Extra Firm to the wrong side of corresponding piece of back fabric.
Now, layer your fabrics to baste together.
Baste around the perimeter of the case.
If desired, mark where you will add button holes to be able to put the case in a binder. You can place a sheet of paper over the case and lightly mark the holes. Make button holes approximately 1″ away from the bottom edge of your case.
Attach the binding to the outside of your case. Remove the paper from your transfer sheet. Give your children a pencil case to enjoy throughout the school year.
