When I was sent the book “Never Been Stitched”, I was excited. Sure, I’ve been sewing a long time, but it is always fun to work on some no-sew and l0w-sew crafts. Not every time I play with fabric has to turn into an epic project, right? I flipped through the book, and loved the Crafty Kid Apron – perfect for my two craft-loving kiddos. My oldest, especially. He is five, and loves painting… but I don’t love trying to get the paint out of his clothes.

The book calls for fabric that already has a vinyl coating. I love using fabrics from my stash, and don’t have very many kid-friendly fabrics that also have a vinyl coating… but that wasn’t a problem. I turned to HeatnBond fusible vinyl.

Heat n bond vinyl

The HeatnBond® Iron-On Vinyl is easy to use. I needed a piece of fabric 13×18″ for the apron. I cut my fabric a little bit larger (one to one-and-a-half inches), then put on the vinyl according to the package instructions. I peeled off the backing, stuck the vinyl to the right side of the fabric, placed the backing on top of the vinyl, then fused in place using a medium setting. Just like that, I had vinyl fabric! Yay!

And, a fun and simple apron for my kiddo to wear when crafting and cooking with me – which means more time hanging out together, and less laundry for me! I’m halfway through my second apron, and then my two boys will have matching aprons! These would also make super Christmas presents… I might want to add a front pocket. Or maybe curved corners. There are plenty of ways to add a personal touch to this simple project.

There are lots of similar low-sew and no-sew projects in this book – you’ll find lots of excuses to play with your iron instead of your sewing machine… though those of us who love playing with needle and thread will have plenty of chances to sew as well.
