Erin from Sewbon here today to share with you this Holiday Applique Placemat Tutorial using the super adorable Hip Holiday line by Blend Fabrics. Make 4 placemats for a set, or make a special one for Santa’s milk and cookies! This project is quick and easy (my favorite!) and can be completed in under an hour.
Want to make one too? Let’s get started!
Materials (for one placemat)
- Assortment of 5 Blend Hip Holiday fabrics
- Scraps for Applique
- 1/2 yard for Placemat Back
- Therm O Web HeatnBond® Lite Fusible applique
- Therm O Web HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece
- General Sewing Supplies
- Darning Foot (optional)
- Accent Thread (optional)
Instructions
One: Cut the fabric as follows:
- Green Ornaments – 3 inches x 13 inches
- Red Trees – 3 inches x 13 inches
- White Swirl – 13 inches x 13 inches
- Retro Cars – 18 inches x 13 inches (for placemat back)
- Fusible Fleece – 18 inches x 13 inches
Two: Draw a 5 inch triangle on the HeatnBond® Lite and a 1 inch x 1 inch square for the tree applique and cut out.
Three: Iron the triangle and square onto the backside of the scrap fabric. Cut the shapes out.
Four: Remove the backing from the Heat N Bond Lite. Arrange the fabric pieces of the placemat to determine the placement of the tree applique.
Five: Iron the applique to the right side of the White Swirl fabric.
Six: With your darning foot and some accent thread, outline stitch the applique tree. Or, use a zigzag stitch and stitch around the applique tree.
Seven: Place the Red Tree fabric on the left edge of the White Swirl fabric right sides together and pin. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Eight: Place the Green Ornament fabric on the left edge of the Red Tree fabric right sides together and pin. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Nine: Press the seams away from the White Swirl fabric.
Ten: Iron on the fusible fleece to the back of the placemat top.
Eleven: Place the placemat top and placemat back right sides together and pin.
Twelve : Sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving a 3 inch opening.
Thirteen: Clip the corners and turn the placemat right side out. Press.
Fourteen: Top stitch 1/4 inch from the edge, making sure to enclose the opening.
Fifteen: Quilt 1/4 inch from the seams of the stripes on the side and you are finished!
BONUS Kitchen Towel
If you have some scraps leftover, you can make this matching applique kitchen towel too! Just follow steps 2 – 6 from the tutorial above on a white hand towel.
