Winter Magic Mixed Media Tag
by Heather Collins
There is something magical that happens when it starts to snow. I can sit beside a window for hours and enjoy watching the snow cover the Earth like a blanket. It magically transforms the world into another world. One where one can guess what the shapes are under the snow and what animal made the footprints.
To start this project I took a tag and covered it with Brutus Monroe Gesso.
Then using a toothpick I made lines to make it appear like the tag was wood grain. While this dried I took a piece of Deco Foil Foam Adhesive Sheets, White and covered one half with Gina K Designs Fancy Transfer Foil, Silver Sequined.
Then using the Gina K Designs Stamp ‘n Foil Baby It’s Cold Outside Craft Dies. I also foiled and cut out several snowflakes with the same die set and the Deco Foil Flock Transfer Sheets – Blue Sky. Out of the same foam adhesive sheet I cut and layered a window also.
Layers are key to making a tag like this. So using the Brutus Monroe Raven Detail Ink I stamped a script stamp and with the Brutus Monroe Embossing Ink and Embossing Powder Alabaster, I stamped a snowflake from the Gina K Designs Baby its Cold Outside stamp set. Next on my tag using the Gina K Designs Glitz Glitter Gel White, Iridescent, Brilliant Blue and Turquoise Sea.
Then to assemble everything I used Rebekah Meier Design Mixed Media Medium. I started with some silver ribbon and white lace. Then some Embossed chipboard. Next was the window I created. I made sure the window had two layers of foam adhesive under it so it would be able to have items peeking out from underneath it.
The medium is key in making sure even the heaviest of objects can stay stuck to the tag. The snowflakes, flowers, chipboard pieces, glitter, ‘snowballs’, and yes especially the polar bear ornament all were all attached this way. To finish the piece I added some Brutus Monroe Aqua Pigment and splattered some black and white paint.
