It is always fun to have a bit of pizazz for my kids to wear to celebrate the Fourth of July. This quick applique pattern will let you create a custom T-shirt easily. Using just a bit of fabric and some Heat n Bond Lite, you will have a unique and patriotic shirt in no time! These flags are sized to fit a child size t-shirt, but you can always scale it up to make one for yourself!
Patriotic Shirts
Let’s get started!
Supplies:
- t-shirts
- fabric- I am using Celebrate America from Riley Blake Designs
- Heat n Bond Lite Fusible Adhesive
- Sewing machine and basic sewing supplies
You will also need the pattern you can find and print here. If you don’t want to print it off, you can make your own templates. First, take a 1″ square of cardstock, fold it in half and cut out a heart shape. Second, cut a 1/2″ X 3″ rectangle and a 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ rectangle out of cardstock.
Applique Preparation:
You will need 4 hearts, 2- 1/2″ X 3″ rectangles and 2- 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ rectangles. Trace the shapes onto the paper side of the Heat n Bond Lite. Next, cut apart the hearts and stripes, leaving a slight margin of Heat n Bond Lite around the shapes.
- Follow directions on the package to fuse the Heat n Bond Lite to the wrong side of the fabrics for your hearts and stripes.
- Cut out all your shapes along the drawn lines.
- Remove the paper backing from each pattern piece.
Creating the Patriotic Shirt:
Position the hearts and rectangles on the center, front of your shirt to create a flag shape. *TIP: I used the paper from the backs of the rectangles to help with the spacing between the stripes.
Fuse the pattern pieces onto the shirt. Finish by sewing around each pattern piece using a narrow, short zig-zag stitch.
Now all that is left is to enjoy your kiddo in their darling new shirt.
