If you are looking to take your summer decorations up a notch I have a quick and easy project for you. Hi! It’s Amy from Ameroonie Designs and these no-sew flags look great as centerpieces, add some height and fun to your buffet, or you can put them on string instead of dowels and create a fun backdrop. Add some sparkly accents with Deco Foil, or keep it simple and just use fabric. It’s a great way to use up scraps.

Supplies

Cutting Instructions:

  1. Begin by cutting your fabric into 3″ (h) X 8 1/2″ (w) strips to make the flag bodies.
  2. Next, cut one piece of Heat n Bond Ultra hold into a 2 7/8″ (h) X 4 1/4″ (w) for each flag body.
  3. Cut one piece of Heat n Bond Ultra hold into a 1 3/4″ (h) X 3 3/4″ (w) for each accent fabric.

Prepare Accent fabric

Fuse the Heat n Bond Ultrahold piece for your accent fabric to the wrong side of your accent fabric. The accent fabric should be bigger than your Heat n Bond. (scraps are great for this) Follow the package instructions for this step.

Next, trim your fused accent fabric to 1 1/2″ (h) X 3 1/2″ (w). **Leave the backing paper on your accent fabric if adding Deco Foil to your flag!

If you are adding Deco Foil accents, now is the time to do so. Cut your shapes out of the hot melt adhesive and fuse to the fabric side of your accent piece following the package instructions. Next, cut a piece of foil transfer a little larger than your accent piece. Place on top of the accent fabric piece and top with parchment paper. Follow the instructions on the Hot Melt Adhesive package to add the foil to your accent piece.

Add Accent Piece to Flag

Press the flag body in half to create a crease in the middle of the long side. Remove the backing paper from the accent fabric. Fold the accent fabric in half and make a slight crease in the top and bottom to mark the half way point of the long side. Line up the creases of the accent strip with the creases in the flag body to center and align the top of the accent piece just lower than the top of the flag. Cover with a press cloth or parchment paper and follow package instructions for Heat n Bond to fuse into place.

Finish Flag

Turn the flag body fabric wrong side up and position the 2 7/8″ X 4 1/4″ on one side of the flag. Fuse into place. Allow to cool and then peel off the paper backing. Bring the two short sides together and line them up. Fuse the first inch or two of the end of the flag. Slide the dowel inside the flag at the crease. Fuse the flag the rest of the way closed, including “on” the dowel to melt the Heat n Bond Ultrahold to the dowel. *Note: continue to use parchment paper if Deco Foil has been added to protect the foil. Use clothespins to hold the fabric onto the dowel while it cools to keep it adhered well.

Now you’re ready to party in style! Happy Sewing Friends! Amy
