I love surrounding myself with pictures of my family. You’ll find them in every room of my house, and the hallways, too! For most moms and grandmas, I think a framed photo is the perfect Mother’s Day gift.
Even better if the frame is handmade, like this quilted picture frame.
The picture frame is simple to make – you can put it together in about an hour. You’ll need:
1 FQ of your mom’s favorite fabric
Thermoweb HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece
Thermoweb HeatnBond® Fusible Interfacing Heavy Weight
For a standard 4×6 photo, cut 4 pieces of fabric, each 7″x9″
Cut two pieces of HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece and two pieces of interfacing the same size, then fuse to the backs of the fabric.
Using a water-soluble marker, draw a box on the back of one of the HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece pieces. Each line should be 1 3/4″ away from the edge.
Put this piece RST with the other Fusible Fleece piece, and stitch on the line, all the way around.
Cut away the center, leaving 1/4″ seam allowance, and clipping in the corners (carefully!).
Flip the fabric right-side-out through the center hole.
Edge stitch around the center hole. This is the front of the frame.
Put the two remaining pieces of fabric (with the HeatnBond® interfacing on them), WRONG sides together, and place the front of the frame on top.
Stitch all the way around, using a 1/2″ seam. Trim edges and clip corners.
Flip the entire frame right side out, through the hole in the center of the frame. Pin around all the edges to secure.
Using your walking foot, edge stitch all the way around the frame. Add additional lines of quilting with your walking foot until the frame is just small enough to insert the photo. Insert the photo through the hole in the front of the frame.
Give the frame to mom or grandma to enjoy!
