Conversational Hearts Quilt Featuring The Sweet Life Fabrics

Hello and thanks for stopping by to look at this sweet little quilt I made with The Sweet Life fabric by Pat Sloan for Moda Fabrics. Do you ever have so many stressful sewing projects on your plate that you long for something simple and easy, that can be done in a day- a stress free project to make you feel good and guarantee no ripping out of hair? I had that kind of day last weekend- so many deadlines and challenging projects that my mind just needed a break. I saw my adorable stack of The Sweet Life and the message fabric really struck me- I thought about highlighting the message inside hearts, and then immediately thought of Conversational Hearts candy that is so popular around Valentine’s day. I had my quilt design idea, and thanks to my trusty Heat n Bond® Lite it was super quick and easy and no stress at all… just perfect and so satisfying- I just love this fun little quilt and I hope you do too.

Fabric Requirements

9 Fat Quarters of fabric for the hearts/blocks 1 Fat Quarter of Message fabric

Heat N Bond® Lite

Batting

Fabric for Binding/Backing

Step one: Cut out 9 9.5″ squares of each print fabric and 9 8″ squares from each print

Step two: Fuse all of your 8″ squares to Heat n Bond Lite leaving the back paper attached. Also fuse a 9″ square of the message fabric

Step three: Get an 8″ square piece of scrap paper and fold in half, draw a half heart taking up as much area in the square as you can. Cut your heart along the drawn line with the paper folded and then unfold to reveal your heart. Use this as a template to trace a heart on the paper backing of each 8″ square. Cut hearts out.

Step four: Find 9 messages in the message fabric to cut out and match each one to a heart. Fuse the message on the heart with the paper backing still on the heart.

Step five: Match each heart with a contrasting 9.5″ block and fuse your hearts to the center of each block.

Step six: Lay out your quilt blocks as you like them and sew the rows of 3 blocks together. And Press seams to the side or open, as you prefer.

Step seven: Sew your rows together creating the finished quilt top. Don’t forget to press your seams before layering to quilt.

Step eight: Layer your quilt top over backing and batting and baste well.

Step nine: Quilt as desired~ I quilted my quilt by sewing just inside all the messages and hearts with free motion quilting, and then used a quilt design called loop de loop that I combined with the word love to fill in the background areas.
