Hi! It’s Lisa Ruble from Quilty Zest and I am so excited to share these Citrus Slice Coasters with you! I started out with plans to make the lemon and the lime (and a watermelon…more to come on that later…), and I loved them so much that I decided to add in the orange and the grapefruit.
You won’t believe how easy these coasters are to make! Especially when you use my shortcut solution for turning circle shapes. Keep reading for all the details (and scroll to the bottom for the watermelon sneak peek!)

You’ll Need:
Scraps of citrus fruit tonals and white
HeatnBond Lite Sewable
HeatnBond Lightweight Fusible Interfacing
HeatnBond Fusible Fleece
HeatnBond Liquid Vinyl

Download the template page here.

Make the Coasters
Step 1 Trace Circle #2 onto Fusible Fleece and cut out. Fold (1) 6″ x 12″ yellow piece in half, right sides together. Trace Circle #1 onto the fabric, spaced at least 1/4″ from the edges. Fuse the fleece circle onto the folded fabric, centering it within the drawn circle.

Step 2 Stitch on the folded fabric around the edge of the fusible fleece circle. Cut on the drawn Circle #1 line. Use a scissors to clip the curved seam allowance, making sure not to cut through the seam.

Step 3 Separate the front fabric of the stitched circle from the back (fleece-backed) side. Carefully cut through the front fabric in the center, making an opening large enough to turn the circle right side out.

Step 4 Turn circle right side out. Use a turning tool to created a smooth circle edge. Press on both sides.

Watch this video to see these steps in more detail.

Step 5 Trace Circle #3 and 10-12 fruit wedges onto the paper side of HeatnBond Lite Sewable. Fuse the wedges to the wrong side of yellow tonal fabric. Cut a piece of Lighweight Interfacing slightly larger than Circle #3 and fuse to the wrong side of the white tonal fabric (see orange arrow below). Fuse the traced circle shape on top. Cut out the circle and the wedges.

Tip: Before cutting the wedges out, peel back the edge of the paper on the larger rounded edge, and then lay it back down. After you cut the wedges out, this makes it easy to remove the paper from the wedges.

Step 6
Fuse the white circle onto the coaster base, covering the center cut. Position the wedges on top and fuse in place.Note: The template shows 12 wedges. Sometimes digital renderings work differently than actual fabric! I could only get 10 wedges to fit in my circle – you may have better luck.

Watch this video to see how to add the wedges.

Step 7 Using coordinating thread, stitch around the yellow edge of the coaster circle and then along the white edge.

Step 8
Following manufacturer’s directions, apply 1-2 coats of HeatnBond Liquid Vinyl to both sides of the coaster.

That’s it! Your coaster is done. And I guarantee you’ll want to make more than one!

I had fun digging through my stash to find just the right citrus-colored prints to use. And I really should have made my grapefruit rind more yellow, but I wanted each coaster to be one color, so let’s call that artistic license! 🙂

And if you were wondering about the watermelon…here it is! I’ll be sharing how to make the watermelon coaster in a FB Live on Wednesday, July 30th, so stay tuned!

Happy summer!

Lisa
