Hi! Amanda here, from Jedi Craft Girl. This spring I have become completely obsessed with appliquéing bunny silhouettes on project: quilts, wall hangings, skirts, pillows, and now my latest creation – the vintage bunny zipper pouch! I am calling it vintage because you can use bits of vintage lace and find fabrics with a vintage-feel, like this Grace fabric line from Anna Griffin. This is a fast little project that would make a perfect gift. In fact, if you sew one today, you will still have time to pop it in the mail so it arrives before Easter! We better get started then!
Supplies:
Fabric; large scraps, fat quarters, etc
HeatnBond® Iron-On Fusible Interfacing
Heat n Bond® Lite
SpraynBond® Basting Spray
3 scraps of lace
zipper
Sizzix bunny die
Instructions:
Cut 4 fabric pieces 6.5″ x 9″. Two pieces are for the lining, a solid fabric for the front, and a print for the back.
Cut 2 pieces of interfacing 6.5″ x 9″ also. Iron the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the back and front pieces.
Using Spray n Bond® basting spray, adhere the lace to the front piece. Notice the placement – if the lace is too low, it will end up on the bottom of the bag. If it’s too high, it will get caught in the zipper seam.
Iron the Heat n Bond® Lite to the wrong side of the bunny fabric and run it through the Sizzix. You can also hand draw a bunny silhouette on the Heat n Bond Lite and cut it out with scissors.
Peel off the backing paper and iron in place. Make sure to place it as so, so the bunny doesn’t get caught in any seams.
Sew around the bunny twice. I like to use an “open foot” so I can see all the little curves I have to sew around.
I already love the bunny so much 🙂
Now we are ready to assemble the pouch. First, prepare the zipper.
For the zipper tabs, Cut 2 strips of fabric 1.5″ x 4″. Press the short ends under 1/4″ then fold in half and press.
I always buy my zippers too long, then I can cut them as needed.
Trim a little off the end of your zipper to remove the metal “stop”. Sandwich the zipper in the folded tab and sew into place:
Now measure the zipper and cut it so when the 2nd tab is on it’s the same length as the fabric, 9″. Sew the 2nd tab. It should look like this.
The whole reason for the tabs is to reduce the bulky zipper in the seams. Cut open the folds of the tab and trim the zipper down to 1/4″ on both ends.
Don’t worry about the excess tab on the top, it will be cut off after the zipper is sewn in. Align the right side of the zipper with the top edge of the front bag piece:
Now add the lining fabric, right side down. Align the top edge and pin. With the zipper foot, sew along the top edge.
Trim the tab pieces that are sticking out, press, and topstitch next to the zipper:
Now, do the same thing with the other side of the zipper. It should be layered like this:
Trim excess tabs, press, and topstitch along zipper. This is how it should look:
Place right sides together of the bag front and back and also right sides together of the lining. Push the zipper toward the lining and pin on both sides:
Sew around entire bag using 1/4″ seam allowance. Leave a small opening on the side of the bag lining for turning.
TIP: I always take about 1/8″ larger seam on the bag lining bottom – just so the lining fits nicely inside the bag.
Cut a 1″ square as a pattern and notch each of the 4 corners.
Open the notch, match seams and sew 1/4″ seam – do this on all 4 corners.
Turn the bag right side out, top stitch the opening and press to smooth out any wrinkles.
