Windham Patchwork Tote with HeatnBond Fusible Fleece

There are many ways to make bags that you create unique.  Hi, Amy from Sew Incredibly Crazy here to show you how to weave in a fabric ribbon into your bag design.

The above bag was created using these beautiful fabrics by Windham Fabrics called Wonder by Carrie Bloomston.  The tote above uses 10 different fabric fat quarters.

and HeatnBond Fusible Fleece.

Windham Patchwork Tote with HeatnBond Fusible Fleece Instructions:

Take a bag pattern of choice or use the basic layout of this one.  This one is created with the following layout. Make two.

When sewing the 30  – 2 1/2″ squares, sew in units of 3.  PRESS THE SEAMS OPEN.  This is critical to have your bag turn out correctly. After, the bag has been assembled.  Backstitch the top seam and the bottom seam of your patchwork.

Iron a piece of HeatnBond Fleece Fusible High Loft to the wrong side of the tote front and back.  While doing this, make sure that the seams on the patchwork remain open.

After completing this step, take a seam ripper and undo the seam from the middle patchwork seam, between the places that were backstitched. Do not cut the fabric, just the seam.  This is why it was important to press the seams open. Sew around this area with less than  1/4″ seams allowance.  This will allow the edges of the fabric to be sewn back down.  The back of the tote pieces will look like this.

Weave a fabric ribbon or rope through the holes that were created.  The fusible fleece holds all the fabrics in place while you stitch around them.   I made a tutorial a back here on how to make a run fabric bow. You can check it out HERE. Add handles and a lining to make your tote complete.
