Hello my sewing friends! I’m back again to share the most fun “upstyling” project with you! This is one of those projects that is so easy you’ll hardly believe it!
This all started when a sewing friend asked my opinion about attaching fabric to a pre-made canvas tote and what did I think about the permanence of the Fusible Adhesive Spray? I realized that I hadn’t actually put it to the test with a project like that. So I bought a pre-made canvas tote and got to work with my fabric and lace wraps! I knew that this is a project that you would enjoy too!
The supplies are so simple:
- Pre-made Canvas Tote (I bought mine at Walmart)
- SpraynBond Fusible Adhesive Spray
- HeatnBond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive Tape
- Pressing Paper
- Fabric Scraps (I used scraps from the Piece and Plenty collection by Lori Holt from Riley Blake Designs. I love it!!!)
- Lace, Trim, Buttons, etc…
- Iron
- Embroidery Thread and Needle
- Free downloadable tutorial
This project could be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. I chose to hit the middle ground and make it fun by doing some improvisational sewing. Have you done that before?
Improvisational Sewing: A creative approach to sewing where you stitch without a pre-determined plan, allowing for spontaneity and experimentation!
If you have not done this sort of hand sewing, this is a great time to try it! It is easy and so much fun…. it just requires a little bit of thinking outside the box and letting your creativity flow!
I had such a great time with the simple project and I’ve got a very easy to follow step by step tutorial for you… just click here and you can download and save my instructions to your computer.
I realize in myself that I love structured sewing, so this was almost a challenge for me to let myself just have fun with the fabrics, hand sewing, and trim!
The absolute best part about this project is that I love how well the Fusible Adhesive Spray worked. I followed the instructions on the Thermoweb website and it was easy. One piece of advice that was given to me was to remember in spraying the adhesive that “less is better”. I was glad for this advice as I have a tendency to really spray heavy on things like this. It did make a big difference! I’ve got a few more tips in my tutorial that helped me as well.
I think this would be a super fun project with kids too! It can be as simple or as complicated as a person wants to make it. I hope you’ll give it a try!
