AmyToday we’d like to officially welcome Designer Amy Friend to the Therm O Web Team!

Amy is a very talented Designer who will be bring to the our Therm O Web/HeatnBond team fantastic sewing and quilting projects that we know you’re going to love!

Here’s a little bit about Amy…

Hello! My name is Amy Friend and I am a designer, quilter, sewer and
printmaker. I have been blogging about my creations since 2009. I
enjoy a wide variety of crafts but fabric and printmaking have been long
standing interests of mine. Currently, I am particularly enjoying
designing paper pieced patterns, modern quilt making, and hand printing
my own fabric designs. I have an Etsy shop where I sell my patterns,
fabric and an occasional sewn item. In addition to the Thermoweb design
team, I am also a Sizzix design team member, BasicGrey Fabric Design
Team member, and part of the Art Gallery Fabrics Fat Quarter Gang.
I have my BA in Art/Art History from Bates College and completed my MA
course work in Art History at the University of Delaware. I worked as a
collections curator of fine arts collections prior to saying home with
my three children ages 3, 7 and 10.

Please help us welcome Amy to the team…

Hi everyone, I’m Amy Friend and this is my first tutorial here on the Therm O Web blog.
I love to sew and blog about my creations at http://www.duringquiettime.blogspot.com.
Today, I’d like to share a project for those of you who would like to decorate your kitchen for Valentine’s Day or who find yourselves baking lots of sugar cookie hearts this time of year!
To make these potholders, you will first need to download the pdf template to cut the candy heart shape.
Next, gather your supplies. You will need:
Supplies:
solid colored pastel fabrics
twill tape for hangers

Using your template, for each potholder, cut two from fabric, one from Insul-Bright, and one from Fleece Fusible.  Cut the twill tape hanger to 5″.

Adhere the HeatNBond Lite Fusible to the back of the fabric you have chosen for your letters.  You can cut them using a Sizzix die, as was done here, or enlarge a font in your word processing program to approximately 2″ and use it as your template.  Create your words, looking to Conversation Hearts for inspiration of course (and nibbling a few along the way).  Use your iron to adhere the words to the potholder front.  Then apply the Fleece Fusible to the wrong side of the potholder front.  Using your free motion quilting foot, stitch around the outside edges of each letter.

Use SprayNBond to create your “quilt sandwich” and keep your layers from shifting while you bind.  First, lay out your backing fabric.  Spray and place your Insul Brite on top.  Spray again and top with your potholder front.

Baste your hanger in place on the upper left side of potholder (on the back).  Cut enough bias cut binding to bind your heart.  It’s important to cut your binding on the bias in order to manage the curves.  Machine stitch the binding to the front of your potholders and hand stitch in the back.

Go on and start a batch of Valentine’s Day treats!

Congrats on being part of the Therm O Web team. I think kids would love to help pick the words for this project.
