Hi! It’s Amanda from Jedi Craft Girl! This week we’re kicking off ideas for Mother’s Day, favorite teachers and just a gift for a special friend! Today’s tutorial is something you can sew up in about 30 minutes. I wanted to create a sunglasses case that had a zipper closure. I find sunglasses cases that snap or velcro still let dust and depris in – especially if you’ve seen my purse! What’s great about this little pouch is the lining is made of flannel so it won’t scratch the lenses. Oh – and don’t you love this fabric, Clementine, by Blend? Super cute!
Let’s get started:
Supplies
fat quarters or 1/4 yards of 2 outer fabrics
1/4 flannel
Heat n Bond® Fusible interfacing
lace trim
zipper, at least 10″ long
Spray n Bond® Basting Spray
Begin by cutting your pieces:
Bag back 5″ x 8″
bag front strip A 2 1/4″ x 8″
Bag front strip B 3 1/4″ x 8″
Flannel Lining (2) 5″ x 8″
Cut the HeatBond® fusible interfacing (2) 5″ x 8″
Using 1/4″ seam allowance, sew the A & B pieces like this: Press
Fuse the interfacing to the wrong sides of both the bag front and back
Using Spray n Bond® Basting Spray to baste the lace into place covering the seam. Sew in matching thread.
Trim off the excess lace.
Layer the bag front, the zipper, and the flannel like this: Notice the zipper is face down. Pin along all the raw edges and sew using a zipper foot.
Now do the same thing to the other side and layer like this: (bag back right side up, zipper face down, flannel.) Sew using the zipper foot
Press pieces like this:
Top stitch along the zipper. Making sure the zipper pull is in the center of the bag, trim off the excess zipper.
Match right sides together and pin all the way around, making sure to match zipper seams. Leave an opening for turing on the side of the flannel. Sew using 1/4″ seams. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Top stitch the opening closed.
It’s done! And super cute!
When I find cute earrings on sale I pick them up to use as zipper pulls. I found these cute owl ones. Clip the earring part off with wire cutters and use a split ring to attach it to the zipper pull.
You can see the flannel lining – so soft and cozy for your sunglasses!
