pennant pillow

It feels like summer here in Southern California and that means fresh strawberries!  We always pick up a flat of juicy ripe berries on the way home from the beach.

strawberriesThis new fabric from Jennifer Jangles called Strawberry Festival totally reminds me of summer days eating strawberries and making strawberry jam!

This cheerful pillow is sure easy to make.  I used Heat n Bond® Feather Lite to applique the pennant shapes.  I love the Lite version of Heat n Bond® especially in quilting because it makes the fabric easy to cut and applique yet is super soft and you almost can’t tell it’s there.

IMG_6473Let’s get started!

Project Supplies:

6 different fabric prints of Strawberry Festival Fabric Collection by Jennifer Jangles
20″ of pillow background fabric
Heat n Bond®  Feather Lite Fusible Adhesive
Heat n Bond® Fusible Fleece
Spray n Bond® Basting Spray
2 yards of lace
zipper
pillow trim
20″ pillow

IMG_6475Cut the Heat n Bond® Feather Lite into rectangles slightly larger than the pennants.

IMG_6476Press the Feather Lite onto the wrong side of the fabric.  You will need 15 total pennants.

IMG_6477I used my Sizzix Fabi to cut the pennant shapes.  It really made this project quick!  You could also use the rotary cutter to also cut out the shapes.  You could even change the shape if you want!

Cut out (2) 20″ pieces of pillow background fabric.

IMG_6478Peel off the backing paper and position the pennants as pictured above.  Heat set into place with a dry hot iron.

IMG_6479Stitch around each pennant with white thread.

IMG_6480Cut a piece of HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece 20″

IMG_6482and fuse it to the wrong side of the pillow top using a hot dry iron.

IMG_6483Once the pillow top is fused to the fleece, position the lace trim.  I love using Spray n Bond® Basting Spray on the lace because it holds it into place perfectly while I sew.  Sew the lace with matching thread.

The pillow front is done.  At this point you can finish the pillow how you like.  I added pink fringe trim around the pillow.  I add a zipper into the pillow back.  You can follow this tutorial if you wish to follow this method.

Do you use the fusible fleece in place of batting? Or is there another purpose?
