It’s so fun to create sewing projects with reds, pinks, and whimsical designs for Valentine’s Day.  It comes at the right time of year for sure.  Why not add a little love to your wardrobe?

Carla here from Creatin’ in the Sticks and I had so much fun embellishing this denim jacket with Hugs and Kisses. I’m here at Thermoweb today to share the fun and quick techniques I used so you can create your own Hugs and Kisses embellishments.

1 purchased denim jacket (washed and dried)

iCraft Fabric Fuse Liquid Adhesive

HeatnBond Light Weight Non-Woven Fusible Interfacing

HeatnBond Lite Iron-On Adhesive

StitchnSew EZ Print Quilt Block Sheets

Fabric:

11 strips of red and pink fabrics 1″ x 6″ for the large heart.

Scraps of pink, red, and blue for smaller appliqued hearts.

Other Supplies:

Aurifil thread:  50wt # 4660

Iron – I love my Oliso Pro

Inkjet printer, 2 yards of 3/4″ trim (mine is hot pink rose), permanent marker, chopstick for turning, tweezers, and basic sewing supplies – scissors, thread, needles, pins, sewing machine, etc.

Sewing Instructions:

Technique #1 – Apply the trim

iCraft Fabric Fuse Liquid Adhesive is a washable, permanent quick bond liquid adhesive that dries clear and remains flexible. It’s perfect for embellishments.  Use it to place the trim around the bottom and cuffs of the jacket.  Apply a small amount in the middle of the trim and clip the trim in place.

Allow the adhesive to dry (overnight) and then remove the clips.  Stitch the top and bottom of the trim in place using the stitching on the jacket as a guide.

Technique #2 – Patchwork Appliqued Heart

Stitch the eleven 1″ x 6″ strips of fabric right sides together with 1/4″ seams.  Press the seams open.  Next, trace the large heart template on the smooth side of the interfacing with a permanent marker.  Cut out the heart 1/4″ from the traced line.  The next step is to cut a 2″ slit in the middle of the heart for turning it right side out later.  Pin the heart on the right side of the stitched strips with the traced line up and the bumpy (adhesive) side down.  Stitch around the heart on the traced line.

After the stitching is finished, trim away the excess fabric 1/4″ away from the stitching line.  Clip the curves and turn the heart right side out.  Use a chopstick to gently push the heart into shape.  Place the heart with the adhesive side down and bond the heart to the jacket with an iron following the package instructions.

Finally, stitch around the heart close to the edge.  If a heart is desired in the center, follow the next technique.

Technique #3 – HeatnBond Lite appliqued hearts

HeatnBond Lite is a paper backed, iron-on, sewable, double-sided adhesive for bonding fabric without extra weight or stiffness.  It’s perfect for adding heart embellishments.

First, trace the applique heart patterns you desire on the paper side of the HeatNBond Lite adhesive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for tracing the patterns and bonding to the wrong side of the pink, red, or blue fabrics.  Next, cut out all applique pieces on the traced lines, peel off the backing paper, and place applique with the adhesive side down on the jacket where desired.  Follow the package instructions to bond the appliques to the jacket and then stitch around each one with a straight, zigzag, or blanket stitch.

Technique #4 – Hugs and Kisses Embroidery

StitchnSew EZ Print Quilt Block Sheets make embroidery a cinch!

Print the XO letter pattern on one StitchnSew EZ Print Quilt Block Sheet.  The quilt block sheet is transparent to make the placement of the letters easy.  The pattern has a line under the letters to make it easy to line up on one of the jacket’s seam lines. This is the pattern to stitch the letters with a sewing machine or embroidery if it is preferred.  Baste the StitchnSew printed letter pattern to the jacket.

Machine stitch on top of the quilt block sheet to make the letters.  Use a triple stitch or stitch a single stitch 2 or 3 times with Aurifil thread:  50wt # 4660.  After the stitching is finished, remove the basting and gently tear away the quilt block sheet.  Tip:  tweezers are so helpful to grab the little bits.

This embellished jacket was one of the most enjoyable projects and
I think my model loves it too!  By the way, I’ve washed the embellished jacket a couple of times already and it looks exactly as it did in these pictures.  These products really are incredible and so helpful when you want to embellish!

Hugs and Kisses,

Carla
