Hi everyone! This is Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams here to share with you what I created with the four fun blocks of the Spring Sew Along!
I designed this adorable Flower Girl Block for the sew along and then incorporated the lovely blocks designed by Carla Henton, Amy Warner, and Carol Swift into my finished piece!
Spring Sew Along Sampler Quilt
I decided to make an adorable mini quilt wall hanging. I incorporated all four of the blocks together with a fun “woven” border. Here’s a quick tutorial so you can do the same if you please.
This tutorial assumes you have sewn strip sets and nine patches before. Always press to the darker fabric.
Supplies
- 4 Spring Sampler Blocks
- Fabric
- four 1/8″ yard cuts (I used a maroon, teal, floral print, and pink)
- one 1/16″ yard cut (I used a dark grey)
- **for the borders only – choose fabrics complimentary to the blocks you made. I used fabrics from the “Botany” collection by Kelly Ventura for Windham Fabrics, Cori Dantini for Blend Fabrics, Jessica Swift for Blend, and Carrie Bloomston for Windham Fabrics.
- one 1/4″ yard cut for the binding
- Thread – Aurifil 50 wt 5006 and Aurifil 50 wt 2545
Cutting Instructions
- Fabric 1 (Maroon)
- Cut (8) 1.25″ x 10.5″ strips
- Cut (4) 1.25″ x 1.5″ rectangles
- Fabric 2 (Teal)
- Cut (8) 1.25″ x 10.5″ strips
- Cut (4) 1.25″ x 1.5″ rectangles
- Fabric 3 (Pink)
- Cut (8) 1.25″ x 10.5″ strips
- Cut (4) 1.25″ x 1.5″ rectangles
- Fabric 4 (Floral)
- Cut (12) 1.5″ x 10.5″ strips
- Cut (36) 1.25″ x 1.25″ squares
- Cut (9) 1.5″ x 1.5″ squares
- Fabric 5 (Dark Grey)
- Cut (24) 1.25″ x 1.5″ rectangles
Sew Strip Sets
Sew four sets of each of these three strip sets. From left to right – marroon to floral to teal, pink to floral to teal, marron to floral to pink.
Sew Nine Patches
Follow the diagram above to sew the nine patches. The 1.5″ floral square is in the middle and the 1.25″ floral squares are in each of the four corners. Place the corresponding 1.25″ x 1.5″ rectangles in the spots indicated in the image.
From upper right – Sew 2, Sew 4, sew 1 and sew 2.
Piece the top
On your design wall, lay out the four sampler blocks, the strip sets and the nine patches as shown in the image above. Once you have all these pieces laid out – sew them all together! Press towards the strip sets as you sew.
Layer, baste and Quilt!
Layer your quilt, baste it (I love using SpraynBond Basting Spray for basting my quilts) and quilt as you desire! I chose to do a fun swirl and floral-esque free motion pattern in Aurifil 50 wt, 5006.
Once your top is quilted, trim the edges and bind in your favorite method!
And now I have a perfect spring inspired wall hanging to help make my house transition from winter! It’s about time!
