Soft Blocks for Fun Play

This little one is having so much fun with the blocks I made using the newest fabric collection by Jennifer Long, It Takes a Village. She was attracted to the bright colors and spent quite a while grabbing them and throwing them around. This project is perfect for using up much-loved leftovers, and quite enough to put together, depending on the number of blocks you plan to make.

It’s time to get creative so gather your supplies and tools!

SUPPLIES:

I used fabrics from Jennifer Long’s newest collection, It Takes a Village.

TOOLS:

  • Iron & ironing board
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter and self-healing mat
  • 5.5″ square quilter’s ruler
  • Hemostat or turning tool

GETTING STARTED:

1.  To make 1 block, cut out 6 different 5.5″ squares. This is the perfect project for fussy cutting. I chose to make 5″ square blocks, but you can go with another size as long as you can turn the block right side out and stuff it.

2. Cut (6) 5.5″ squares of fusible fleece. Apply the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the fabric.

ASSEMBLING:

1. Take two of the squares and line them up, right sides together. Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch down one side starting 1/4″ from the top and lo all the way down to 1/4″ from the bottom. Be sure to lock the seam at the beginning and end.

2. Stitch 4 squares together to form a row of sqaures. Sew the first square to the last to form a loop.3. Turn your work wrong side out and pin or clip the bottom square to the body of the block. Stitch with a 1/ 4″ seam allowance. Go slowly and turn your work when you get to the corner to get a nice pointed corner. Repeat the process for the top square, making sure to leave an opening to turn your work right side out.

4. Using a hemostat or turning tool, push out the corners and fill your block with fiber to the desired density. Hand stitch with a tight ladder stitch.

Thanks for joining me and I hope I’ve inspired you to create some soft blocks for your little one. Get ready for fun play with these blocks!  This project is also a great way to get through those little pieces you’ve been hoarding in your fabric stash.
