Hello, I’m Heather Collins, Therm O Web Mixed Media Educator and also Director of Operations for Brutus Monroe. Today’s project was inspired by the need to just go away with friends and craft to recharge yourself, and that is just what I did back in mid-November. I get asked, all the time, how to add foil to projects if you don’t have a laminator. Well, that’s what I did with this project, no heat needed, no laminator needed. A project like this does take time, because there were many elements that needed to dry, but the results are definitely worth it.

Directions:

To start this project, I created a 3D moon shape using aluminum foil from my kitchen. TIP: Work over plastic wrap to make a non-stick surface for this project.

Once I was satisfied with the shape, I covered the entire moon form with a thin layer of Creative Paperclay. Next, I added dents and scrapes on the surface to mimic craters, adding more Creative Paperclay where needed to create extra dimension. Then, I let it dry according to package directions.

Next, I applied Brutus Monroe’s White Gesso over the entire surface so it could be painted and set it aside to dry again.

Afterwards, I added lighter Aqua Pigments to the surface of the moon and, once again, let it dry.

While the moon was drying, I added texture to a round blank canvas using a stencil and white modeling paste. I set this aside to dry, then applied a layer of White Gesso and let it dry again. Using Aqua Pigments, I applied layered colors to the canvas to mimic a night sky. This was allowed to dry before moving to the next step.

I attached the moon to the canvas with iCraft Ultra Bond Liquid Adhesive. To add more dimension and some shine to the finished piece, I applied this adhesive along the edges of the craters on the moon and dotted it onto the stenciled canvas. When the adhesive had dried to a tacky touch, I took a sheet of Brutus Monroe Gold Star Transfer Foil, color side facing up, and gently rubbed over the sheet to transfer it to the adhesive. This elevated and finished the mixed media piece, without needing any heat or special equipment.

I finished the piece with some additional decorative elements applied with iCraft Ultra Bond Adhesive, including stamped art, crystals and glitter.
