One of my favorite things to do during any holiday season is to decorate my front porch bench. Each year I make a new pillow to place out there to welcome guests! This year is no exception. I knew I wanted a fun tree shape this year and made this graphic pillow. The tree has a lot of depth and texture to it because of my layered fleece technique you’ll learn all about when you make your own sculptured Christmas Tree Pillow!

Supplies:

Two 20” squares of background fabric (I used some holiday napkins I found instead of fabric yardage!)
Two 20” squares of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece for pillow interfacing
One 12” square of green wool felt
One 3” square of golden metallic vinyl
Two 12” squares of Heatnbond Fusible Fleece (for behind Christmas tree to give depth)
12 wt Aurifil Thread for decorative stitching
One 18” invisible zipper
Stuffing or a 20″ pillow form that is for outdoor use
Download the tree and star pattern here.

Sculptured Christmas Tree Holiday Pillow Instructions:

Step 1

Print out tree and star template. Cut out tree shapes, match on the dashed line, and tape. Cut out and use as a pattern to cut out the green felt for the tree shape and the gold vinyl for the star.
Hint: Don’t have gold vinyl? Use the Therm O Web DecoFoil Hot Melt Adhesive and gold Transfer sheets to make your own shiny star!

Then use the tree template and 12” squares of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece to cut out TWO trees that are about ¼” smaller around all the edges.

Step 2

To attach the tree and fusible fleece underneath we’ll first stack the two pieces of fleece together and press. This will stick one to the other, making a super thick tree shape.

Now center this on the back of the felt tree shape and press again well to hold the thick HeatnBond Fusible Fleece shape on well. Center the tree on one 20” background fabric square and pin well.

Stitch about 1/8” away from the outside edge of the tree shape to hold in place. The fleece won’t show, but will provide some depth and interest to your tree shape. See how nice and puffy my tree looks?  Stitch the star on as well.

Step 3

Once the tree and star are in place use a thicker 12 wt. thread and larger needle. Set your stitch length to a longer one. (It’s around 4 on my Janome machine.) Then stitch some garlands on wherever you’d like.

Step 4

Iron on the two 20” fusible fleece squares to the back of the two background fabric squares. Then install a zipper. I used this tutorial to easily install an invisible zipper. Stuff your pillow and place on your own bench or sofa!
