It’s nice sometimes to start and finish a project in one afternoon. My scrappy cat coaster is perfect for quiet afternoon sewing. You won’t need many supplies you may actually have everything on hand.

It’s time to get creative so gather your supplies and tools, and don’t forget to download the template I’ve created to help you along with this project! Scrappy cat coaster PDF file.

SUPPLIES:

I used different fabrics left over from a past project from Amour Vert by Monaluna.

TOOLS:

  • Iron & ironing board
  • Coordinating thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter and self-healing mat
  • Quilter ruler
  • Pinking shears

GETTING STARTED:

1. Download and print the templates. Print actual size – do NOT “fit to page” or “shrink to fit.”

2. Cut strips of fabric that are 1.5 inches wide in a variety of colors.

3. Sub-cut the strips into 1.5-inch squares. You need a total of 36 squares for the coaster top. For the backing, cut a 6.5-inch square.

4 Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, assemble six squares in a row until you have six rows total. Press the even rows to the right and the odd rows to the left. Now, assemble each row.

5. Use the template to cut out the patchwork top, fleece, and backing. You can use either fusible or sew-in fleece. If you are using fusible fleece, apply it to the wrong side of the patchwork top. If Using the sew-in Fleece Baste. It to the wrong side of the patchwork Top.

6. Place the backing and the top right sides together. Pin them together. Starting at the bottom of the cat face, use a 1/4″ seam allowance to stitch the perimeter of the coaster, leaving a 2-3 inch opening.

7. Use pinking shears to trim the rounded edges and clip the corners, being careful not to cut into the stitching. Turn the coaster right side out and use a turning tool to create smooth curves. Press. Hand-stitch the opening using a tight ladder stitch.

FINISHING:

8. Using pearl cotton, stitch a running stitch to quilt and embellish the coaster.
