Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial

Hi friends, Alicia here again with a really fun and amazing quilt tutorial! I was so excited to work with the Season of Love line from Blend Fabrics! It has all these beautiful peacocks and the colors totally inspired me to add some of our beautiful shiny deco foil!

Deco Foil™ Transfer Sheets in Various Colors

Deco Foil™ Liquid Adhesive

Stitch N Sew™ Sew In Fleece

Blend Fabrics – Season of Love: ~1 yard of each print (this will leave you with plenty of yummy scrap pieces.)

White or contrasting fabric for binding and sashing. I used 2.5″ pre cut strips.

Project Instructions:

The first step is to grab a piece of cardboard or a paper bag to make a template. Cut a 9″ square from the bag and then grab a bowl and trace a circle directly in the middle. This is going to be your best friend when making this quilt. Cut the circle out.

Use the template to fussy cut your squares. You can see I lined the circle up so that I could see the whole peacock and then cut the square out. Do this 20 times. Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Now grab your liquid adhesive and a paint brush. Use the fabric as a guide to paint a few images with the adhesive. Let the adhesive dry as instructed.Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Now cut yourself some foil pieces to cover the dried adhesive. Using two pieces of card stock on either side of the fabric go ahead and run it through the laminator. I only put mine through once because I wanted it to have an almost antique feeling (I didn’t want the foil to be perfect.) Run it through several times if you want to make sure the foil completely transfers. Repeat this step with all 20 squares. Use your template to make sure the image you are painting is going to show up!Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Next you will want to cut 20 more 9″ squares. These square will go over the foiled squares you just created. Grab one of the foiled squares and place the plain square right side up on top.Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Now use your template again to trace the circle onto the new piece. Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Using the line as your guide sew 1/4″ around the outside edge of the circle.Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Now cut on the outside of the pen mark. You can try and leave the circle in tact, they would make a great appliqué for another project! This is what you should have (note there will be some fraying since this is a raw edge. It should stop when it hits the stitching.)Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Now you will need 20 more squares for the back of the quilt. I used the quilt as you go method. So I placed my circle block on top of a 9″ piece of sew in fleece and then placed my back square underneath right side down. You are basically making a really small quilt sandwich.Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

Quilt all your squares using whatever quilting pattern you choose. Square them to 8.5″.Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.com

This VIDEO is my favorite for learning the quilt as you go method. I used strips that were 2.5″ wide and for 15 of them I simply pressed them in half. The other 15 I cut to 1 1/4″. Reverse Applique Deco Foil Quilt Tutorial | www.thermoweb.comI recommend an assembly line method. This will save you lots of time and thread!

Once you have made your 5 rows of 4 you will need another 4 sashing strips that measure the length of your rows. Attach these and then bind the quilt! I have a great binding tutorial on —-> THIS post if you need binding tips!
