It’s a jungle out there, but you can make it a “Rainforest Fun”, kind of play day, with this activity mat complete with 10 bean bags. We continue on with where the fun left off, from the “Hopscotch Fun Children’s Activity Mat” found HERE.
These 2 quilts are reversible to allow for all kinds of playtime, indoors or out. “Rainforest Fun” offers a toucan-style “Tic-Tac-Toe” game. The beanbags serve double duty by making a “corn-hole” type game using the green lines on the quilt. Aim to throw the bags to land in-between the 2 toucans, for older children. Getting them past the green line is great for smaller ones.
This mat features “StitchNSew High Loft Sew-In Fleece” that quilts up nicely and flat, making it perfect for an indoor/outdoor play mat.

Supplies
3 yards – background fabric (will have enough left for tote bag coming soon)
(4 if working with directional fabric and you do not want to change direction)
3/4 yd – orange block fabric
1/4 – yd yellow solid fabric
1/4 – yd green solid fabric
½ yd – black batik for appliques
1 fat quarter (or scraps) of yellow, red, orange and white batik fabric for appliques
½ yd – stripe fabric for lettering (if you bought yardage for the other side, you will have enough)
1/3 yd – yellow-green fabric and pink fabric for beanbags
1/3 yd HeatNBond®Fusible Fleece
2 yds – StitchNSew High Loft Sew-In Fleece (you already have it if from the reverse side)
2- packages HeatNBond EZ Print Lite to print the pattern
1 – 2 yds HeatNBond®Lite if you are tracing pattern or using dies for lettering
ThermOWeb Pressing Paper
7 ½ cups of plastic weighted Poly Pellets (my preference) or beans for beanbags
“Crafters Edge” Cross Over II and dies make cutting as easy as 1-2-3. But never fear, similar lettering is included in the pattern if you do not have these.
I’ve included tips and tricks for quilting a 2-sided quilt, while keeping the centers of each side lined up.
Liquid Vinyl waterproofs bean bags as well as protects the appliques from wear and tear. Just paint it on with a foam brush or a fine bristle paintbrush and let it dry. Brushes wash up easily with water. If you are using beans inside of your beanbag, you need to apply 3 coats to make sure they are kept dry. Any moisture picked up while playing with them will eventually make the beans mold. I prefer the “Poly Pellets” and 1 or 2 coats of HeatNBond Liquid Vinyl.
1 coat – water and stain-resistant
2 coats – waterproof and stain-resistant
3 coats – waterproof and stain-resistant with a semi-gloss oilcloth finish.
But wait…the fun still doesn’t stop here. There’s a cool Toucan Tote bag to carry all the fun around in. (coming soon!) And there’s the other side of the quilt HERE!
Keep all your scraps of fabric and I will see you soon with that Toucan Tote.
Enjoy!
