Easter Egg Place Mat- Jacquelynne Steves_

Hi Everyone! Jacquelynne here! It seems like I start out most of my project descriptions by saying, “This is fast and easy….” Well, here is another one! I don’t like things that are complicated or take too much time- I tend to quickly get bored and lose interest in things, so my projects need to be completed FAST so I can move on to the next one, ha ha! I’m sure a few of you know what I’m talking about….

This is a fun afternoon project, and a great way to use up your scraps. What a pretty addition to your Springtime table!!

Easter Egg Place Mat Project-Jacquelynne Steves-

For EACH place mat, you will need:

White or cream fabric for top of place mat- 17 1/2 x 9 1/2”
Green fabric for bottom- 17 1/2” x 5 1/2”
Green fabric for binding- about 1/4 yard
Backing fabric- 20 x 17”
Thin batting 19 x 16”
Scraps of assorted fabrics for egg
Ribbon, rick rack or other trim- 18” long (about 1/2- 5/8” wide)
Fusible web for machine applique- I recommend Heat n Bond Lite by Thermoweb
Thread for piecing, applique, topstitching ribbon/trim, and quilting

Instructions:

Sew White and Green fabrics for place mat together along long edges. Place the ribbon or trim over the seam and pin in place (it will be a little long.) Topstitch the long edges of the ribbon in place, about 1/16-1/8” from the ribbon edge, with matching thread. Trim excess ribbon from edges of placemat.

Cut the scraps into strips, about 7” long and of varying widths (about 1”- 2 1/4” wide.) Sew the strips together along the long edges until you have a piece that is about 7 x 9” in size. Press the seams well.

Trace the Easter egg pattern onto the paper side of fusible web. Cut out shape, leaving about a 1/4” border. Place shape on WRONG side of your pieced fabric, with the paper side up and adhesive side down. Iron fusible web shape to fabric according to manufacturer’s directions (make sure to iron both sides for maximum adhesion.) When cool, remove the paper backing.

Place Easter egg right side up on place mat. Iron in place. Machine applique the edges of the Easter egg.

Layer the placemat, batting, and backing fabric together. Quilt as desired. For my placemat, I just did freemotion loops. Trim excess batting and backing fabric.

Bind with green fabric.
