Hello and happy fall season! I can’t believe all the holidays are around the corner. I’m starting on all my handmade gifts right now! Here’s a sweet little fall project that you can gift anytime this fall season – Pumpkin Potholders! I used my favorite HeatnBond Fusible fleece to create this easy potholder. These would make sweet hostess gifts for the many Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas parties we are all attending!
Let’s make these Pumpkin Potholders!
Pumpkin Potholder Instructions
Materials Needed:
- Four cotton pieces – larger scraps work great!
- HeatnBond Fusible Fleece
- Decorative ribbon
- One Pumpkin Put Holder Template – Print onto cardstock and cut out – CLICK HERE FOR TEMPLATE
Tools Needed:
- Sewing Machine
- Rotary Cutter and Mat
- Ruler
- Iron – I love Oliso!
- Stiletto or chopstick – to turn out project and smooth edges
- Water soluble erasable pen
Cutting
- Cut four 8 1/2″ x 7″ cotton rectangles – for the outer body, outer pockets, and inner linings NOTE: If making quilted pockets, piece together one quilted panel so it measures as an 8 1/2″ x 7″ rectangle
- Cut three 8 1/2″ x 7″ HeatnBond Fusible Fleece rectangles
- **NOTE: if making a pair of Pot Holders, double the material. This pattern and instructions are for one Pot Holder.
Tips
- Use a 1/4″ seam allowance unless noted otherwise
- Use a 1/8″ seam allowance for basting
- Follow the instructions for HeatnBond Fusible Fleece as directed
Let’s Begin!
Make the Outer Body and Lining
- Attach the 8 ½” x 7” rectangle interfacings to the 8 ½” x 7” outer body cotton rectangle and the 8 ½” x 7” inner lining rectangle. Follow the instructions per the package to correctly adhere the interfacings.
- Quilt the outer body if desired. Take the provided pumpkin template and trace onto the quilted outer body. Cut the shape out. Trace the pumpkin template onto R inner lining body as well.
- Attach the stem to the top middle area of the pumpkin outer body. Fold the ribbon in half and with the raw edges facing, place and pin on the top, leaving a ¼” overhang. Baste in place.

Make the Outer Pockets
- Take the outer pocket piece and attach an 8 ½” x 7” rectangle interfacing to the outer pocket piece. Find the middle area and cut it in half down the center of the rectangle. Repeat for the inner pocket lining rectangle. You should now have 4 smaller rectangles.

- Lay an outer pocket rectangle and inner pocket rectangle with wrong sides facing each other. Sew a seam along the right side. Repeat for the second rectangle set and sew a seam along the left side. Open each of the seams and press with an iron to the other side.

- Take the pumpkin template and fold along the line as indicated.
- Turn the pockets over to the backside (inner lining side). Take a right pocket piece and align the right side of the template (the straight side) to the folded seam. Trace the template onto the pocket piece and cut the shape out. Repeat for the left side, making sure to align the left straight side of template to the left folded seam of the pocket piece).
- Edgestitch a seam on both folded seams of the pockets.

Assemble the Potholder
- Take the inner pumpkin lining and face it up. Place the right pocket piece onto the right side of the inner pumpkin lining and clip in place. Repeat for the right side. Baste the pockets in place.
- Take the outer body pumpkin and place onto the pocket piece with right sides facing together (wrong sides/interfacing pieces facing out) and clip in place. Sew around the entire pumpkin shape, leaving a 3” opening on the bottom of the pumpkin.
- Clip the rounded edge seams of the pumpkin and clip a notch on the top area of where the stem is.
- Turn the pumpkin right side out using a chopstick or stiletto, smoothing out all the rounded edges. Pop out the stem. At this point, I like to press the shape into place. Turn the seams of the opening inwards and hand sew in place using a ladder stitch to hide the seam.
You are now done!
