Hi again, It is Amy over from Sew Incredibly Crazy. My daughter took on a service project for her school a couple of months back. There were a couple of young children in the area that had taken their own life. The ever so present story was that the children were bullied by their classmates for years. In this day in age, we need to tell our children how important they are to us and that they are making a difference. It all starts with a change of heart and there her idea was born. She decided to make 200 fabric hearts with messages on each one of them and decided to call it Project Heartstrings.
Each one was cut from my fabric stash, a bevy of fabrics from peace signs to Star Wars. She had a free reign to a huge variety. I loved seeing even the smaller pieces being used.
She used a cutter and rolled out 400 individual hearts. With a few tubes of Fabric Fuse Glue, some colorful string, good friends and a few hours, she had all the hearts completed.
At her school district, she was given a few minutes with the younger grade school children to have an assembly. Reminding each to be aware of the things that we say to one another, that we should believe in ourselves, or just to say a simple hi.
The children were then given the opportunity to write how to make a difference in another person’s life, whether it be brother, sister, or fellow student.
After writing down their ideas, each had the choice of which heart they would take. The students and also teachers absolutely enjoyed picking from the rainbow of hearts that were displayed across the table.
Since then, the hearts have hung on backpacks, school chalkboards, or used as a bookmark. Just a friendly reminder of how easy we can affect the lives of those around us.
A huge thank you to Thermoweb for supporting this cause.
