Patchwork Heart Mug Rug

Looking for a quick gift for that someone special?  Amy of Sew Incredibly Crazy here to show you how to create a quick and easy mug rug.

Materials Needed:

HeatnBond High Loft Fusible Fleece
9 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of background Fabric
32 pieces of various 1 1/2″ Fabric pieces
12 – 2 1/2″ square of various fabrics
15″ x 10″ piece of fabric for the backing
Aurifil Thread #2425
Heart Pattern
~This is a great project to use mini charms, leftover jelly roll pieces, or charm squares~


Patchwork Heart Mug Rug Instructions:

The seam allowance throughout is 1/4″

For the Heart, sew the 2 1/2″ squares according to the diagram below.    Set the 2 1/2″ squares aside.

Sew the 1 1/2″ squares with 5 in a row.  Make 2.  Sew the remaining 1 1/2″ squares with 11 in a row.  Make 2.

Sew the 5 block strip to each of the 5 1/2″ sides.

Sew the 11 block strips to the top and the bottom of your mug rug.

Iron a piece of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece to the back of the mug rug.

Take the Heart Pattern and trace it to a piece of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece.

Iron it to the back of your 2 1/2″ block that you made earlier.

Cut on the line and lay in the center of your mug rug.

Put the backing fabric on the back of the mug rug.  Quilt as desired.  Applique stitch around the edge of the heart.

After the quilting is completed.  Trim the mug rug backing to 1″ around. Using the backing for the binding of the mug rug was created using this tutorial.
