Hello friends! It’s Monday and that means it’s time to mix things up! Join us all this week as we highlight projects for pets and pet-themed goodies as this Friday is National Dog Day! Wait till you see all the fun projects we have planned in honor of our furry friends! Designer Juliana Michaels, a lover of dogs herself, kicks things off today with a fun Mixed Media Dog House featuring products from our Rebekah Meier Mixed Media line!
It’s Juliana, and today I’m sharing how to create a Mixed Media Dog House from a wooden bird house using some Therm O Web products including their Rebecca Meier Mixed Media Adhesive Sheets, Foam Sheets, Transfer Foil and Transfer Gel.
Gather Your Supplies
Begin by gathering your supplies. This includes a wooden bird house, stamps, stencils and mini wooden rulers. The Therm O Web supplies include Rebecca Meier Mixed Media Adhesive Sheets, Foam Sheets, Transfer Foil in Penny, Mixed Media Adhesive and Transfer Gel.
Mixed Media Dog House Tutorial
Remove the perch from the bird house. You can usually easily remove this with a pair of pliers. Create a template of the sides of the bird house using copy paper or other such thin paper. Trace these onto the Mixed Media Adhesive Sheets and cut them out.
Place the wood grain stencil on top of the Adhesive Sheets and use a pallet knife to spread a thin layer of Transfer Gel over the top. Carefully remove the stencil and wash it with soap and water. If you would like to add some stamping, do it before you apply the Transfer Gel. I recommend using a permanent ink such as Ranger Archival Ink for your stamping.
Allow the Transfer Gel to dry until clear. Cover the stenciled area with a piece of Mixed Media Transfer Foil, making sure the color side is facing upward. Place this inside a folded piece of parchment paper and run it through a preheated laminator. Make sure that the grain of the foil is running horizontal to the opening on the laminator to help achieve full coverage.
After you have foiled the Adhesive Sheet, you can add some color using ink and foam blending tools.
Finishing Touches for Mixed Media Dog House
To decorate the house, stamp your dog and other elements and color as desired. Die cut them or trim them out by hand. If you have the dies, use them to also die cut a piece of Mixed Media Foam Sheets. Peel of the lining and adhere the stamped and colored images to the foam sheets. Attach them to the dog house.
The roof was created using the Mixed Media Foam Sheets as well. Die cut strips of them using a scalloped die and then apply Transfer Foil in New Penny to each strip.
The final touch in decorating the dog house is to trim and adhere the wooden rulers to the edges of the roof and base of the dog house using Therm O Web Super Tape.
I hope you enjoyed learning how to transfer a wooden birdhouse into a Mixed Media Dog House. The ideas for other transformations are only limited by your imagination! Happy crafting!
