MEOW Composition Back to School Book Cover
I love composition books! I use them for everything! With all the fun back to school shopping and preparation I decided I needed a fun “back to school” item for ME!!! HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece makes this cover sturdy but not bulky. The sweet little kitty is appliquéd with HeatnBond Lite. Here is you you can make your own MEOW composition book cover!
Composition Book Cover Supplies:
HeatnBond® Lite Fusible Adhesive
HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece Interfacing
Cotton + Steel Fabrics:

(2) 11″ squares for book cover flaps

Composition Book Cover Instructions:
Begin by cutting (16) 2 1/2″ squares out of an assortment of scraps. I used all my Cotton + Steel scraps 🙂
Cut the center portion out of a natural linen color 7″ x 16 1/2″
Sew the squares together in (2) rows of 8. Press seams to one direction.
Sew the scrappy rows to the top and bottom of the linen piece.
Trace the cat and the MEOW onto the HeatnBond® Lite. Make sure your kitty helps during the whole process!
Roughly cut out around the kitty and the letters and heat set to the wrong side of the desired fabric, again using scraps.
Peel off the backing paper and position the appliqué pieces as pictured above. Heat set in place.Outline stitch 2-3 times around each appliqué piece in dark thread.
Cut a piece of HeatnBond Fusible Fleece 16 1/2″ x 11″. Fuse it to the finished appliqué piece.
At this point you can add some decorative quilting or not. I added a few zig zag stitches to the scrappy squares.
Cut a piece of fabric 16 1/2″ X 11″ for the composition book lining
Cut (2) squares 11″ for the flaps. Press them in half.
I love using the selvage of the Cotton + Steel fabrics. Using that selvage, I cut out a strip and used SpraynBond® Basting Spray to hold it in place on the flap. Then I top stitched it on with the flap open. I love the fun little accent it gives it!
Lay the lining piece right side up. Position the two flaps on each side with the fold toward the center and the raw edges lined up with the lining.
Place the fused appliqué top piece right side down. Pin all the way around.
Sew around the entire project, using 1/4″ seams. Leave a 3″ opening at the bottom center for turning. (Do not catch the flaps in this portion.) Turn right side out and press the seam so it lays flat and the corners look nice.
Pin the opening closed and top stitch just the 3″ area on the bottom.
To add a Deco Foil Heart….
Cut a heart out of Deco Foil Hot Melt Adhesive
Heat set it in place. Let cool.
Peel off paper. Place Deco Foil over heart and top with pressing paper. Heat with a Medium iron for 15 seconds. Let cool completely.
You can see where the heart stuck to the foil. After it’s cooled, gently remove the foil. Magic!!!
