I think Valentine’s Day decorations are just the best. Who doesn’t need some reminders that LOVE is really the most important thing? This simple Love applique hoop is fast to make and a great accent to your other decorations, just switch out the fabrics to coordinate with your favorite colors and it will fit perfectly!
Information on the bicycle pillow can be found here, and the tutorial to make the heart mini banner is available on my blog Ameroonie Designs through this link.
Love Applique Hoop Tutorial
Supplies:
- 8″ embroidery hoop
- Heat n Bond EZ-Print Featherlite Fusible Adhesive
- Wool or wool blend felt
- fabric for background and letters (I changed the background fabric from what is shown in this picture.
- Hot glue gun and glue (optional, for finishing the back of the hoop)
- The pattern for Love applique
Prepare Applique Letters:
Print off your pattern onto the EZ print Featherlite paper. The image is already reversed. Cut out the pattern leaving a slight margin around the letters. Fuse onto the back of the fabric for the letters following the instructions on the package.
Cut out each letter along the printed line, make sure to cut out the hearts in the letters “o” and “e”. Remove the paper backing from the letters. Fuse the fabric letters onto the felt. Cut out the letters leaving a scant 1/8″ margin of felt around each letter.
Attach applique letters:
Press your background fabric to remove any creases. Place your hoop on the background fabric so you know where to position the letters. Make sure to leave at least an inch on the outside of the hoop to allow to tighten the fabric once placed in the hoop. (The background fabric should be at least a 10″ wide piece) Pin the letters in place and take it to your sewing machine. Sew around each of the letters using a scant 1/8″ seam allowance to the inside of the fabric. (Alternatively, you can make this no-sew by simply gluing the applique letters in place on the background fabric).
Finishing Applique Hoop:
If you want to wrap the outer ring of the embroidery hoop, do it now. I use a 3/4″ strip of fabric and just wrap it around the hoop. Yarn, ribbon or embroidery floss are all good options for wrapping your hoop.
Center your applique on the inner ring of the embroidery hoop. Place your outer ring over the inner ring and tighten the fabric and hoop to hold it securely into place. Make sure you do not distort or shift the applique so it stays centered.
Trim the background fabric to about 1/2″ from the hoop. Use hot-glue to adhere the fabric to the inner ring of the embroidery hoop. OR finish the back of your hoop using your favorite method.
All that is left is to find the perfect place to enjoy your hoop!
Happy Valentine’s sewing my friends! xoxo, Amy
