After a long winter, the longer days and brighter sunshine are a welcome sight around here. Spring is starting to show its face, and I couldn’t be happier! I think spring is my favorite season. I love the sounds of the birds chirping in the trees, the leaves that are starting to emerge, and the colors that are starting to make their appearance.

Sunny Fabric Drink Coasters

My morning tea has changed from winter spice and peppermint flavors to fruity tastes like strawberry and peach, and instead of drinking it inside under a blanket, I can now enjoy it on my front porch! To celebrate this welcome transition, I created these cute sunny coasters to help bring the sunshine indoors to keep that wonderful spring feeling going all the time! They are easy to make and perfect for gifting. I used my Crafter’s Edge Crossover II fabric cutting machine to make the pieces, and they went together super fast! Perfect for scraps of fabric, these are fun to make and even more fun to use!

Supplies Needed

Sewing Instructions

  • Cut out the fabric pieces. For each coaster you will need:
    • 1 – 6.5″ circle for the back
    • 1 – 6.5″ circle of batting
    • 1 – 3.5″ circle for the center
    • 1 – 3.5″ circle of interfacing for the center
    • 14 – 2″ tumbler pieces
  • Sew the tumbler pieces together to form a circle. Press all seams in the same direction.

  • Using Spray n Bond basting spray, baste batting circle to the backing circle of fabric, wrong sides together.

  • Place scrappy coaster front right sides together with backing fabric. Pin in place. Sew all the way around the outer edge.

  • Turn right side out through center opening and press.

  • If desired, draw a smiley face on the 3.5″ sunshine center and stitch with contrasting thread. Place center fabric right side toward the bumpy side of interfacing circle. Sew all the way around the edge. Cut a small opening in the center of the interfacing and turn the center circle right side out.

  • Place center circle on coaster front and press in place. Stitch all the way around the circle to secure. You can sew by hand or with your machine if you prefer to “quilt” your layers together.

  • Give your coaster a good pressing and enjoy! I plan to keep one and gift the other two. They make the cutest little packages!

I hope you enjoy this little project! Happy sewing, and happy spring!
