Most of us have some type of charity that is close to our hearts. I personally have two: The Veterans of the United States and cancer patients. The reason behind the two are that my father is a Veteran and I have lost two family members to lung cancer.
I have made quilts for charities and find it very satisfying to do so.
Recently, a family friend’s grandson had been relapse with lung cancer. It is his third bout with the disease. I knew that I had to take the time and make him something beautiful. Something that would keep him warm. A quilt was definitely in order.
I knew that he loved the stars and everything about the night sky.
So, this is what I designed for him.
Jared’s star – A star shooting across the night sky. It kept me up several night knowing that I had to finish the quilt and give it to him in person. The charity quilts that I have made got sent off, I never knew who the person was and how they are doing. This quilt was different. I was going to give it to Jared personally or to his family. He had been in and out of the hospital, fighting this disease. After I finished the top, I decided that I need to add a label to the back. I didn’t want anything fancy. It was a teenage boys quilt.
Most quilters are guilty of not adding a label to the back of their quilts.
Well, at least I am very guilty about not adding labels to my quilts. So, I wanted to share with you the super easy way that you can add a label to your quilts.
The supplies that you will need are:
Coordinating fabric
I got on Word and found a star and printed it out on one of the HeatnBond EZ Print Lite sheets.
Talk about easy.
If you hate tracing out all the shapes to applique patterns, this is the way to go.
After ironing, I cut out the star on the line.
I then used a black Micron pen to write upon it.
Back to the iron, and placed in the back bottom corner before I quilted. This not only adheres the star to the fabric, but it also sets the ink in the fabric.
I then made a zig zag stitch around the edge of the star.
Finished quilting and there it is.
I took several pictures of it in our never ending snow. It just doesn’t seem to melt away , but it does make a beautiful backdrop for quilts.
I dropped off Jared’s quilt to him the middle of January. I hope that it brings him comfort and joy.
