Into the Woods Mixed Media Clock by Heather Collins

Going into a store I will beeline to the clearance aisle and the hunt will begin. Sometimes I will put those prized items that I find on display, other times I will put them in my stash of items to create with another day. Last Christmas I found this “Little Red Riding Hood” Christmas ornament, another time in the spring I found a little wooden door; both went into my stash. Then my son and I went into a big box store and found a few big clocks; into my stash, they went. Every time I would go to create something, I would look at those items, but the timing just wasn’t right. When I saw the line of Brutus Monroe/Thermoweb Foil Transfer Sheets and Designer Toner Sheets the time was right to use those favored saved items.

To start this mixed media project, I started by taking one of the jumbo clocks I had apart. Which was a pretty easy project, the middle part of the clock I discarded into my stash bin for another possible project another day. I had a piece of scrapbook paper and laid the back of the clock on it, traced the circle, cut it out and attached it to the inside of the back of the clock.

When it comes to creating I try to do all of the same types of steps at once and assemble everything at the same time. Due to the nature of drying time, this project did take some time. So I tried to use the heat gun sparingly since some of the items used I don’t like to speed up.

Using my Big Shot and some cutting dies I cut out my Birch trees and grass with the Deco Foil Toner Sheets and set aside. The Deco Foil White Foam Adhesive sheets were the perfect item to cut out my leaves. I laid a piece of Deco Foil Emerald Watercolor face down, removed one side of the adhesive from the leaves and adhered the leaves to the piece of foil. Then I applied pressure with a brayer so that foil would attach with no heat needed. I heated my Minc machine to setting number 4. I had a piece of folded copy paper and made a sandwich of a piece of white cardstock, foil, and the Brutus Monroe Designer Toner Sheet. This method allowed me to not have the items jam in the Minc. I this for all of my desired foiled pieces.

My little wooden door was unfinished until I painted it with Brutus Monroe Aqua Pigment Brown and a light rubbing of gold paint. The dropper was the perfect way of getting into all of the natural cracks of the wood. I also colored the Brutus Monroe Stamp of the Month- Sunflower with my Stylefile markers, then fussy cut them out. The little flower beads were taken off of artificial flower arrangements that I had also in my stash. I used Nuvo clear drops on the center of the flowers, that took a bit to dry but was worth it in the end.

Using the iCraft Mixed Media Craft Adhesive Glue I attached the foiled trees, grass, mushrooms. I had an old “Little Red Riding Hood” book from the 1930’s, I used the Black foam squares to adhere the cover to the back of the clock too. This gave it dimension rather than laying it directly onto my scrapbook paper. Then I used the Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Mixed Media Medium Jar I attached the rocks. I used the Black foam squares to hold the door onto the clock while the Rebekah Meier Designs Mixed Mixed Media Medium Jar set up to dry and covered the foam with rocks also. Then I cut the Brutus Monroe Designer Toner Sheet- Marble into 1.5” strips and attached to the inside rim of the clock with medium sized Zots. This gave the piece a little surreal appearance, kind-of like a time warp. I even attached my “Little Red Riding Hood” character with the mixed medium.

After putting the back on the clock I started on the front. Using my scissors I took off the other side of the adhesive on the leaves that I had cut out and foiled out of the Deco Foil White Foam Adhesive sheets. I used the Zots again to attach my Sunflowers and spiders. The mixed medium adhered the scroll piece and charmed saying. To finish off the clock, in the bottom corner I attached a little grass foiled piece and spider. I love how this piece came out, I hope you do too.
