Hi!  It’s Jen from The Smitten Chicken.  Today I am sharing a tutorial on how to spray baste a quilt!  Do you spray baste or pin baste?  There seems to be a great debate in the quilting world over which method is better.  After this tutorial, I hope you will be on team spray baste!  Or at least give it a try!

Baste a Quilt with SpraynBond

Let’s get started!  First, you need to gather your supplies.

Supplies you will need:

SpraynBond Basting Adhesive

Oliso Iron

Quilt Backing Fabric

Batting (I use Warm and White)

Quilt Top (I made Swan Island by Elizabeth Hartman and used my favorite Bonnie and Camille fabric)

Tape (You can use Purple Tape)

First, you need to make sure your quilt back and quilt top are pressed!  I love using my Oliso iron!  It gets super hot!  And it leaves my backing and quilt top super flat.

Next, we will start assembling the quilt sandwich.  Start by taping your backing fabric down on a surface.  Keep in mind you will have a little bit of overspray.

TIP- the backing needs to be right side DOWN!  Otherwise, the back of your quilt will be the wrong side.  Smooth out all of the wrinkles and get your backing as flat as possible.  This will ensure you don’t have puckers while quilting.TooltipText

After your backing fabric is flat and taped to a surface, its time for the batting layer!  Take your batting and smooth it out.  The goal is to get everything as flat as possible!

TIP- the backing fabric and batting needs to be a few inches bigger than the quilt top.  This will give you a little wiggle room as your quilt top may shift around during quilting.  Most quilters want about 4-6 inches extra all the way around the quilt top.TooltipText

To complete the quilt sandwich, place the quilt top on the batting.  Smooth it out and try and get it as flat as possible.  Looks like I have a few more wrinkles to get out!

Now it’s time to spray!  I divide the quilt in half and spray baste half of the quilt at a time.  This makes it more manageable than doing the entire quilt at once.  Pull the quilt top and batting back.  First, you will be basting the batting to the quilt back.  Spray the quilt back with SpraynBond Basting Adhesive.  I spray about a 6-inch section and then hand press the batting onto what I just sprayed.  Then I spray another 6 inches and continue until you have completed half of the quilt.  Then do the same thing with the other half of the quilt.

Once you have basted the batting, it’s time to baste the quilt top!  I use the same process as mentioned above.  Dividing the quilt in half means I will be basting one swan at a time.  TIP- Pay attention to which way the seams are going.  I sometimes have to readjust seams so they will be basted the direction I initially pressed them in.  Then spray a 6-inch area and hand press the quilt top onto the sprayed area.  And repeat!

Now my quilt top is all basted!  I am ready to quilt my quilt.  My favorite thing about the SpraynBond Basting Adhesive is no sticky residue on my needle!  This makes quilting a breeze!

And it’s all done!  I had a lot of fun quilting this quilt!  And did you notice the backing?  It’s Swan Lake fabric!  I thought this matched perfectly with the swans!  I used to be a ballet dancer (before I had kids) so this was such a fun addition for me!

If you have been following along on Instagram, I have been posting a monthly pic of my baby.   This month’s quilt is this beautiful Swan Island quilt.  You can check out the hashtag #louloumonthbymonthquilt to see my baby grow!

I’ve spray basted for years, but it’s getting hard to find your product now (Walmart and Meijer don’t carry it anymore and Joann’s is almost double the price). I bought a different product to try, and it isn’t the same. The other product stinks, where your product doesn’t stink. I wish it was easier to find your product. I’ve been recommending your product for years.
