Hi everyone! Kim from Persimon Dreams here to chat with you today.  Over the past few months, I have discovered a new love … Hot Yoga.  I know many of your right now think I’m absolutely crazy and would never in a million years think doing yoga in a room that is somewhere between 90 and 105 degrees.    A year ago I was with you.  Then, I accidentally tried my first hot yoga class and after one class, I was hooked.

When I went to the gym I thought I was going to a normal yoga flow class … it turns out it was a hot yoga flow class.  Since I didn’t have any tennis shoes with me and I knew that if I left at that moment I would never come back I decided to give it a try. I’m not sure what it is about it that I love … but I am officially hooked.

Flying Boat Yoga Mat

One of my favorite yoga classes is Yin.  Yin is a class that is very slow paced and very relaxing.  I love it because it helps me to reset my mind and to really stretch out my sore muscles. Many of you don’t know me but I always have ten hundred million things going on in my head and yin is that one hour a week that I just turn off my mind and breathe. I decided to make a quilted yoga mat cover to go over my mat while I do the Yin practice.  There are towels and blankets out there that you could easily use instead of a quilt but we all know that there’s something extra comforting about having the feel of a quilt under you as you are relaxing.  You also don’t sweat too much in yin so this quilt won’t need to be washed as frequently as they may if used in other classes.

Dear Stella Designs generously sent me a bundle of the beautiful Adelaide fabric that I made a “Flying Boat Yoga Mat” with.  Since the fat quarters I had weren’t quite as big of pieces as I needed per the pattern … I pieced some of them together to make fabric for the pattern.  I really like how that worked out.

breathe surrender one words

Since this was going to be specifically for yoga I decided to raw edge applique some special words onto the “Flying Boat Yoga Mat” – breath, surrender, and one. – using Heat N Bond® Lite.

You can get the free templates for these words HERE.

I sent this one to my friend Mindy Skinner over at Stitches by Mindy for the quilting on this mat.  I love the wall in my hot yoga room and my instructor let me sneak in after class to take a few photo’s of the quilt in its element.  (Seriously!?  Isn’t that barn board wall incredible!?)

This was a fun project and I hope it inspires you to give something new a try!
