Hello friends!  I had so much fun this week partnering with Benzie Design and using their beautiful, high quality felt to create this really adorable journal cover.   I’ve written a tutorial that you can download and print (or save to your computer) so that you can make one too!  This is a really nice project for first time embroiderers, as you can make it very simple…. or learn new stitches and make it more complicated!

I sketched out some flowers for my journal cover and you can download and print those as well.  However, you can also sketch out your own flower design and sizes!  I made mine fairly simple in order to let the embroidery stand out!  Let’s get started!

Supplies

I absolutely love using HeatnBond EZ-Print sheets when I am doing any sort of appliqué.  And it works amazing with felt as well.  It is so simple to use… all you have to do is print your pattern to the paper side of an EZ-Print sheet.   And you are on your way!  Follow my tutorial for the step by step instructions.

And Benize Felt??  Oh my goodness, it is so wonderful.  If you’ve only worked with the felt that you buy in craft stores… treat yourself to a medley of wool blend felt from Benzie.  They have so many amazing and gorgeous collections.  I chose to use the  Mushroom Medley Palette for my colors.  I am just in love with the colors!   I also purchased their matching embroidery thread and it took all the guesswork out of it for me.

Working with felt is so much fun because there are no raw edges that you have to worry above unraveling or fraying.  And with Thermoweb HeatnBond EZ-Print Iron On Adhesive you can adhere your design and barely need to do anything to make it permanent.  I had fun using the beautiful embroidery threads to dress my designs up a bit.  And even if you don’t know how to embroidery, a simple back stitch or running stitch is all you would need to do and it’s so easy but adds so much impact.

Once you’ve sewn on your flowers, you can add leaves, embroidery thread stems and embellish with ribbon and any assortment of things.  Have fun and enjoy the process!  The end result is so beautiful!  The yellow ribbon I used on the spine of the book was what Benzie Design used to tie the felt together when they sent it to me… so I literally used everything that came in their package!

I loved this project, I absolutely love the combination of Benzie Design supplies and Thermoweb… they work so well together!

Happy crafting my friends!
