Today I am sharing a quick and easy tutorial featuring Jennifer Jangles new for fall fabric collection, A Walk in the Woods. When I see seasonal fabrics like this, I tend to think of home decor projects, things for the table especially. I decided to pair two of the prints with Kona solids and then applique fall shapes on the corner, inspired by the fabric collection. These basket liners would make a great hostess gift for Thanksgiving.
To begin, cut 4 pieces of fabric 18″ x 18″ to be the fronts and backs of 2 sets of basket liners or napkins (they can be used for either). Apply HeatnBond Lite to the back of several scraps. You can choose to use a die cutter for your shapes or hand draw patterns as I did, inspired by the designs in the fabric.
Fuse your appliques to the corners of two of the squares leaving ample room for seam allowances and top stitching. I kept mine about 1 1/2″ in from all sides.
Next, using a tight zig zag stitch, stitch around the edge of each shape. I used a variegated thread in fall hues and I think it adds to the texture/design. You could also use a solid, coordinating thread.
With right sides together, pin and stitch around the perimeter with a 1/4″ seam, leaving an opening for turning.
Don’t neglect to clip your corners! This little step leads to a much more professional finish. Next, turn your liner and poke out the corners. Press carefully, especially at the edges. It is not necessary to hand sew the opening because you will now edge stitch. Edge stitching is so close to the edge that it catches in the turned opening.
Place your reversible basket liners into your basket and whether than are closed, covering the bread, or open to display the bread, they are pretty and seasonal!

September 29, 2014 at 6:54 pm (10 years ago)I adore this little quilt. Sometime in early November I will be having major surgery and this would be the best project for me while recovering. I will have to depend on family and friends during the holidays as I will be very limited in what I can do.
