Fairytale Deco Foil and LDRS Creative

Make sure to stick with me to the end of the post for a bonus project using LDRS stamps.

Fairytale Christmas Cards Tutorial

STEP ONE:

Begin by creating a candy cane stripe using Transfer Gel Duo and the Peppermint Stick Stencil (when using a stencil for a large area such as this, the Stencil Pal is an invaluable tool as it covers most of the stencil in one pass).

Next, use a spatula or stick to add some Gel Duo along the entire edge of the Stencil Pal and smooth it over the stencil, then gently pull the stencil up to reveal your candy cane stripes. You will know the Gel Duo is ready when it turns from white to clear (you can see the difference in the bottom right image).

Hint: If you don’t want to wait for the Gel Duo you can use your laminating machine but you will need to make sure your Gel layer is very thin and sets up just a bit before foiling.

STEP TWO:

Apply a Deco Foil Transfer Sheet (dull side down) over the clear Gel Duo and burnish using the Stencil Pal or a bone folder. Peel the Foil Transfer Sheet back to reveal your beautiful foiled stripes. I started with the red stripes but as you will see in the next images, I decided I after I die-cut the candy canes that I wanted to use the Fairytale Foils instead.

Hint: If you are using this as a background or mat for your card, cut your paper size to slightly larger than you want so you can trim it down and clean up the edges.

STEP THREE:

Die-cut candy canes and peppermint sticks from the foiled paper and Christmas stockings from patterned paper. I did three because I knew I wanted to do three coordinating cards. Die-cut the top fuzzy part of the stocking three times from a Foam Adhesive Sheet. Peel the release paper from the top and press it against a piece of White Latte Flock Transfer Sheet, transferring the flock to your Foam Adhesive pieces. Peel the backside of your Foam Adhesive fuzzy pieces and adhere them to the tops of your stocking die-cuts. This die-cut would not be nearly as cute without that fuzzy top!

Hint: If you do not have Foam Adhesive Sheets, die-cut cardstock with Thermoweb Peel n Stick double-sided adhesive on the back. Use this adhesive to adhere the Flock Transfer Sheet. You can also layer several die-cut stocking tops under the first layer to achieve the dimension of the Foam Adhesive Sheets.

STEP FOUR:

Create three card bases mixing and matching patterned paper and Deco Foil Unity Card Fronts. These card fronts are so easy to use that you can have a classy finished cards in minutes! Simply place a Foil Transfer Sheet (dull side down) over the card front and run through your foiling machine pursuant to machine instructions.

Hint: Add watercolor over your foiled image for a more personal one-of-a-kind card.

STEP FIVE:

Assemble your cards using Ultra Bond Liquid Adhesive, Super tape, and 3D Foam Strips or Squares for dimension.

Hint: Add some bakers twine or ribbon bows for the perfect finishing touch.

Bonus Project:

So I started this image with the intention of putting it on the red striped background (that was before I got die-cut happy and cut it into candy canes) and ended up not using it for my blog projects. It was so cute though I hated to not share it. I used the two LDRS stamp sets listed above and a technique I saw on one of Tim Holtz’s holiday lives. I stamped the barn and then stamped the Christmas lights and wreath over the top without masking. I then painted in the Christmas accessories using Distress Oxide Inks. Because these inks dry opaque, they hide image underneath. Once the Oxide Inks were completely dry, I stamped over the top of the Christmas accessories again for a clean outline.

Hint: In order to stamp the accessories in the exact same place before and after painting, you will need a stamp platform.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial as much as I enjoyed creating the cards. Remember, any colors can be Christmas colors and you can turn any image into a Christmas image . . . even a barn!
