As paper crafters, we all know that stencils are fabulous basic tools to have on hand, as there are so many ways to use them to achieve interesting backgrounds, focal points, and accents on virtually any project. One of my favorite looks for our Deco Foil stencils is to pair them with Deco Foil Transfer Gel and any one of our many colors of Deco Foil Transfer Sheets to create beautifully foiled designs. But today I’m going to share a couple of other techniques for using stencils in different ways, to hopefully help give you some ideas for stretching the use of those crafting supplies.

Creative Techniques for iCraft Deco Foil Stencils:

Use stencils to create unique masked and stamped one-layer panels. This is a great way to keep your cards flat for mailing. And by changing up your stamped images, you can totally change the look of the design to fit any theme or occasion.

To begin, tape off a portion of the stencil using our low-tack Purple Tape.

Use small pieces of purple tape to hold down a 4.5″ square of Luxury White cardstock onto your work surface. Center the taped off section of the stencil onto the cardstock, and hold it in place with more tape. Using an ink blending tool, apply ink to the paper by rubbing over the top of the stencil.

Remove the stencil. Fill in some of the empty spaces with small stamped images.

Continue filling in spaces of the stenciled panel with additional stamped images. If needed, mask off portions of your stamp with Purple Tape before inking. Remove the tape before stamping. You can re-use the tape mask over and over again, so be sure to save it.

Continue stamping until you have filled in the entire pattern.

Cut a piece of scrap paper that is slightly larger than your stenciled panel. Die cut a circle from the center of the scrap paper using the smallest shape from the Stitched Circles Large die set. Tape the scrap paper over the stenciled panel, lining up the circular opening with the stenciled design below.

Stamp a focal image in the masked opening, and color as desired. Add ink around the edge of the paper using an ink blending tool.

Adhere the stenciled panel onto a piece of patterned paper. Stamp a sentiment onto a small piece of cardstock, and fussy cut or trim it out (or use the matching dies, if you have them). Adhere the sentiment to the panel using 3D Adhesive Squares. Tie a small bow from twine, and add it to the card using Fabric Fuse liquid adhesive.

Creative Techniques for iCraft Deco Foil Stencils:

Create abstract designs with layered stencils. This can be done with one stencil or with several mixed together.

Tape a strip of Luxury White cardstock to your work surface with Purple Tape. Or if you want an entire background, start with a larger piece of cardstock. Tape the stencil over the cardstock with additional pieces of Purple Tape. Ink over the stencil using an ink blending tool.

Rotate the stencil, and repeat the process.

Continue turning and inking the stencil until you have achieved the look you desire. This works particularly well with abstract designs, like this Modern Links stencil, and totally changes up the look of the original pattern.

Create a simple layered 3.5×5 card base, and adhere the stenciled strip down the center with XL Memory Tape adhesive. Stamp and color a focal image and sentiment strip. Die cut the main image with GinaK Designs circle dies. Nest two circle dies together, holding them in place with Purple Tape. Die cut three circle frames from Luxury white cardstock. Stack and adhere the frames together, and add the elements to the center of the card.

Enjoy!
