I love the look of ribbon, and am always looking for different ways to use ribbon on my craft projects. This fun altered frame home decor project is a great way to use lots of ribbon, including some of those small scraps we all like to hoard. With Easter quickly approaching, I took this opportunity to create some seasonal decor to brighten my front entryway for the holiday.

This basic idea, of lining a negative cut-out with ribbon, can be done in any shape or size, for any holiday, season, or occasion you wish. And with the help of Therm O Web’s fabulous PeelnStick Fabric Fuse Tape, this project couldn’t be easier. Let’s take a closer look.

To begin, gather your supplies:

AudreyPettit Thermoweb EasterEggFrame Tut1I dug through my stash of ribbons and found an assortment of bright colored ribbons to choose from, and then found a piece of patterned paper that matched nicely. If you’re going to create a frame project, gather that, too. The fun thing about this technique is it can be reduced in size and used for a card, or added to an art journal, or even turned into a wall hanging. You’ll also need some sturdy paper, like heavy weight cardstock or watercolor paper. And you’ll need an egg pattern template, sized to fit your base. If you need a pattern, you can find many free templates on the internet. Just do a Google search for egg images.

Cut a piece of watercolor paper to fit the inside of your frame opening. Place the egg template in the center of the paper, and trace around it with a pencil.

Apply strips of Fabric Fuse™ Tape across the entire image. Leave the backing liners on.

Working from the top down, remove a few of the backing liners at a time, and press ribbon strips down onto the adhesive. Continue all the way down, until the entire shape is covered with ribbon. You can stop here, or for added texture and detail, add a few thinner pieces of trim on top using the liquid Fabric Fuse™ Adhesive.

Cut a piece of patterned paper to fit the frame opening. Turn the paper over to the back side, and trace the egg pattern onto the center of the paper. Cut an X in the middle of the egg using a craft knife, and then trim out the shape using your scissors. Add ink to the inside edge of the egg using an ink blending tool.

Adhere the patterned paper negative on top of the ribbon design using SuperTape™. This super strong adhesive is perfect for projects like this frame that will get a lot of handling and need to stand up to the test of time.

Insert the egg into the frame. Tie a big bow from matching ribbons and adhere it to the left side of the frame using Zots™ Clear Adhesive Dots. Stamp sentiment onto strips of watercolor paper, and tuck those under the bow, securing with additional Zots™ adhesive dots. And finally, add a button to the center of the bow using one last Zot.

AudreyPettit Thermoweb EasterEggFrame3Such a fun idea! I can see it used in so many different ways. Think I might try something similar using a star shape and the good ol’ red, white, and blue for the 4th of July.

Enjoy!
