Hello! It’s Stephanie from Sissy Belle Sews, and I’m so excited to join in the fun of Christmas Sweater week here at ThermOWeb! I’ll have to admit, I’ve never been one to actually wear an “Ugly Christmas Sweater,” but I do think they’re fun and I love seeing what people come up with when they create their own.
I decided to combine the theme of this week with my love for mini quilts and pillows and came up with a design for a Christmas sweater pillow! I have also created a free PDF pattern for you that tells you how to piece the mini quilt and includes the applique templates. While the pattern is for an 18″ x 18″ mini quilt, you could easily turn it into a pillow with a little know-how. That’s what I did, and I love how it turned out!
Christmas Sweater Pillow Supplies Needed
- 1 package of HeatnBond Lite
- Scraps of fabric for the applique
- Dark brown, light brown, pink, white, black, and ted
- Batting and backing for your mini quilt
- Reindeer Sweater Mini pattern
Christmas Pillow Sewing Instructions
- Make the mini quilt according to pattern instructions
- For the applique, trace the applique pieces on the paper side of the Heat n Bond.
- Cut out the pieces but do not cut on lines. Leave a little extra room along the edges.
- Fuse the pattern pieces to the back of the fabric according to package instructions.
- Cut the pieces along the drawn lines.
- Remove the paper backing from the applique pieces. Arrange them on the pieced mini quilt and fuse them in place.
- Stitch around the edges of the applique pieces to secure them in place.
- Add embellishments! I added buttons to make it really look like a shirt, and some pom poms because they’re fun!
If you make one too, please tag me so I can see! I am thinking about appliqueing these templates on a real shirt next! I just love how this little reindeer turned out!
Thanks for sewing along with me!
