It’s been such a treat to share blocks with you for the Christmas Joy Sew Along. Today there is another one for us to show you! Each block will go together with the hourglass blocks to make a 50″ x 58″ quilt. Techniques for this quilt involve piecing and applique.
The information on the final project will be posted on December 11th, so you’ll want to check the blog posts from Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to get the scoop on fabrics and blocks. We took the day off for Thanksgiving…hope you enjoyed some turkey!
Christmas Sew Along
Applique Block Four – Stocking (make four): Pattern can be found HERE. Two stockings will face to the left and two stockings will face to the right.
Fabric needed for Stockings – Fat quarters or large scraps for stockings, toes, and top of the stocking.
Cut 4 – 8 1/2” x 8 1/2” squares from applique background fabric.
HeatnBond EZ Print Lite
A product that will definitely become your favorite when doing applique is the Heat n Bond EZ Print Lite Sheets. They run through your inkjet printer which means no tracing. The Heat n Bond Lite Iron-on Adhesive is great when you need to trace your designs or when a design is larger than the printer sheets. Both of them are amazing to work with!
Following a key for applique helps know where to place the designs. Don’t get so focused on having it be perfect that you don’t enjoy the creative process. It’s okay if the designs are a little bit different than the key. The important thing to remember is to make sure your fabrics overlap where they need to so your stitches will hold the fabrics in place.
The stocking has two different keys because they face different directions. Iron-on applique designs are almost always mirrored so they will be facing the correct direction when you iron them on your fabric. When you download the PDF patterns, you’ll find that the designs have all been reversed so you don’t have to. The keys show the correct direction for placement.
We’d love to see the progress of your blocks on Instagram or Facebook. Tag your posts with #thermoweb so we can see them!
