The quilt pictured is 56” square and uses Blitzen fabric by BasicGrey. This quilt can just
as easily be made from scraps, charm squares or jelly rolls. More rows can be added to
make a larger quilt.

How to Construct the Quilt Top
The front of this quilt is made using a traditional block pattern called the Cogwheel.
To create an individual cogwheel, you will need to cut a 4 ½” square and four 2 ½”
squares. Group your fabrics into major color groups and then begin laying them out
selecting from a different color group for adjacent cogs. Contrast between adjacent
cogwheels is important for a successful design.
This is a sample layout of a 12” square area.

As you can see, you will be creating rows of alternating squares and four patches. I
began sewing from left to right, one row at a time. I sewed the top two 2 ½” blocks
together and ironed my seams to the right. I stitched the bottom two 2 ½” blocks together
and ironed my seams to the left. I then sewed the four patch blocks together. When I
stitched the four patches to the adjacent full squares, I ironed the seams toward the full
squares, away from the four patches. This makes it easy to match up the seams when you
sew the rows together.
