Boston Terrier Sunglass Case Instructions

Please read through all instructions before starting this project

Step 1:

olisopro

Stitch 3 ½” x 9” and 5 ½” x 9” pieces of fabric together, right sides together, with a ¼” seam to form the outside 8 ½” x 9” rectangle.  Press, then center the 8” x 8 ½” HeatNBond fusible fleece on the wrong side of the pieced outside fabric with the adhesive side down leaving a ¼” around the edges.  Follow the package directions to bond the fleece to the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 2:

stitchingdiagram

Pin the outside fabric to the lining fabric with right sides together.  Mark opening where indicated in the picture and stitch 1/4” from the edge of the fabric leaving the openings.  Clip off the bottom corners, turn inside out, push out corners with a chopstick, and press.  Press ¼” seams at the openings to the inside and press.  Top stitch 1/8” from edge to close the large opening at the bottom.  This seam will be hidden inside the case later.

Step 3:

linesmarked

With an erasable pen, mark a line down the center of the outside fabric.  It should be 4 ¼” from either side.  Mark another line 1” from the top where the openings are.  This will form the casing for the snap closure.  Stitch on the marked lines, backstitching at the beginning and end.  Tip:  A walking foot will help to keep the fabric from bunching up at the cross seams.

Step 4:

appliqueplacement

Measure 2” to the right of the center stitched line and place a mark.  This will be the center of the applique design on the right side.  To prepare the applique pieces, print the pieces on one sheet of HeatNBond EZ Print Lite Iron-on Adhesive following the package instructions.  Pieces F and H can be appliqued, but for this application, do not use those pieces.  F and H are the patterns for the Deco Foil.    If HeatNBond Lite is being used, trace all the pieces except F and H on the paper side of the HeatNBond Lite.  Cut the pieces apart leaving ¼” around outside lines and fuse them to the wrong side of scrap fabrics following the package instructions.  Cut the pieces out following the lines and, using the key, position the pieces over the center mark peeling the backing paper off as the pieces are positioned.

Tip:  The tip of scissors is a great tool to nudge applique pieces into place.TooltipText

Bond all the applique pieces at one time following the package instructions.  Stitch around each piece with matching Aurifil thread in a straight, zigzag, or blanket stitch.

Step 5:

Step5

Prepare the snappy closure by cutting the tape measure into 2 four inch pieces.  Round the ends by cutting a semi-circle on all ends with old scissors.  Now, wrap the ends with electrical tape and slip the 2 pieces into the casing at the top with the bump towards the outside fabric.  Top stitch 1/8” from the edge to encase the tape measure on both sides of the casing.

Step 6:

step6

Fold fabric in half on center stitching with outside fabric inside, matching casing stitching and edges, and pin. Make sure the tape measure is pushed towards the middle and out of the 1/4″ seam allowance.  Next, stitch the side and bottom with a ¼” seam.  Turn the case right side out, gently push out corners, and press.  The corners will be a little rounded.

Step 7:

To make the sunglasses shine, trace the applique pattern pieces F and H onto the paper side of Deco Foil Hot Melt Adhesive.  Cut the pieces out and place them, bumpy side down, on the fabric sunglasses according to the placement key.  Cover the sunglasses with the included parchment paper.  With the iron set on the wool setting (medium) and no steam, press and hold the iron on the parchment paper for 30 seconds.  Next, remove the paper and let the Hot Melt cool completely.  Follow the directions on the package to apply the Deco Foil Lapis Watercolor Transfer Sheet to the Deco Foil Hot Melt.  Now your shades will shine.
