This scrapbook page was a true labor of love. My daughter plays Roller Derby, yes it is still a sport. But she also goes roller-skating with friends for fun, as many teenagers and preteens do in our area. At the place she goes to it is about 30 minutes from our home but a true Mom and Pop owned facility.
On one of the “teen drop off” nights Kaylee fell and broke her collarbone. The staff mobilized her and my husband rushed her to the hospital where she was attended to. After many months of attempted healing, it was determined that surgery would be the best next step. May 5, 2020, after 6 long months she has been fully cleared after this long journey.
Broken and Back Scrapbook Layout
To start this project I found a 12”x12” piece of scrapbook paper that had a nice background started. Then I started doing what I call “layering” the piece”. It is best if you are distressed to start at the beginning. So I tore and roughed them up with scissors and then inked them with Brutus Monroe Raven Detail Ink, then heat set with my heat gun.
Next, I took a Brutus Monroe stencil, and with a pallet knife I spread “Gina K. Designs Glitz Glitter Gel – Turquoise Sea” then “iCraft Deco Foil Metallix Gel- Glazed Pewter”. Next, I took a wooden stamp I had in my craft room and stamped randomly with Brutus Monroe Raven Detail Ink on my page. Then I splattered with a toothbrush white paint, black paint, and Brutus Monroe Metallic Aqua Pigments Delphinium. And then heat set with a heat gun.
My next step was to cut various pieces of paper into stripes so that I would have different lengths and widths of ‘banner type’ papers. To get perfect points I used “iCraft Deco Foil Purple tape” to hold a square cutting die when I ran them through my die cutting machine.
I assembled everything with “Gina K. Designs Tape Runner” and started with putting Deco Foil Transfer Sheets – Silver that I had backed with Deco Foil Toner Sheet. The main picture I also put is Deco Foil Flock Transfer Sheets – Black Velvet.
I roughed up the edges around the main picture to go with the distressed feel of the page. Screw brads were added around the edges of the main picture. The edges of the outside photos I used were 3D White Foam Squares Combo Pack I used the bigger size under the outside of the photos and the smaller on my title.
When people do scrapbooking, many of us do it for the “good” of life, but sometimes there comes along something that is bad and it has to be worked through. Art is how I process things in my life, the “good” and the “bad”. Each moment on this piece resents something in this chapter. The tears along the edges represent how we are all torn and rough around the edges from life but whole in the center.
The black and blue tone shows the battle wounds of the pain. The black and white heartbeats pattern paper shows the good and bad of the situation. I used stitched dies to cut out the photos for the stitching that it took to put my oldest back together. The screws are for the custom hardware that now is part of her for her life. The saying finalizes the piece, but truer words could not be spoken: “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think and LOVED more than you know”.
