Batman Halloween Cosplay Costume with HeatnBond Interfacing

Making only 2 minor modifications to view B of Simplicity pattern 1699 I created a cosplay Batman top. The first modification was to omit the collar and second was to create a high-low hemline to add a little drama in the back. All of the procedures in the instructions provided with the pattern are perfectly on point except since the  Black Stretch Faux Vegan Leather Fabric from Girl Charlee is a stretch knit when sewing I used an overlock machine, if you don’t have an overlock machine on hand use the stretch stitch on your machine, this will allow the fabric stretch without popping a seam.

A couple of notes and tricks to working with Faux Vegan Leather…Set your iron to Synthetic. When pressing interfacing in place or HeatnBond Soft Stretch use a pressing paper over your fabric this will allow for a long heat time without damaging your fabric or your iron.

To create the emblem belt. Cut a piece of Faux Vegan Leather Fabric 3 inches by (desired waist measurement + 1 inch). Cut a piece of HeatnBond Fleece Fusible High Loft 1-inch x desired waist measurement. Fold fabric in half lengthwise with right sides facing and sew along raw edges. Turn right side out. Using bodkin or safety pin thread HeatnBond Fleece Fusible High Loft piece through Faux Vegan Leather Fabric tube centering seamed edge at back. Tuck excess fabric inside tube at both ends. With lengthened stitch length top 2 lines evenly spaced down the length of the belt. I recommend using a  walking foot for a nice even feed.

For emblem trace oval on yellow fabric and Batman logo on the paper side of HeatnBond stretch. Press HeatnBond Soft Stretch to the wrong side of Faux Vegan Leather scrap. Layer yellow fabric, faux leather, and fleece so that oval is visible. (photo shows this layer out of order, the faux leather and yellow fabric must be touching)

Stitch around drawn the oval line. For the perfect curves reduce your stitch length and slowly pivot around the tighter turning corner.

With layers sewn together trim away excess fabric with pinking shears. Open a small hole in the yellow fabric, turn oval right side out through the created hole.

The hole in the center will be covered up by Batman. Press batman in place. Finish belt by sewing emblem to one side of belt and snaps in place for the perfect fit closure.
