Back TO School

Is it seriously almost that time again?  Running around grabbing school supplies, and preparing for sack lunches.  How about taking creating an embroidered I-pad pouch with a little bling.

You will need:

BTS Project 12

To begin your project you will need an iron on transfer or pattern.  There are thousands out there that are so adorable.  I chose a pattern by Aunt Martha. The school-house design is ironed on a 10 1/2″ square piece of white fabric.  You then can color the school-house and embroider it.   After completing this step, add your Deco Foil™ Liquid Adhesive  to the desired area that you wish to foil, in this particular design I chose the bell and the sun.

BTS Project 13

Let it dry completely.  It will be firm and tacky to the touch.  Grab a piece of Deco Foil™ Transfer Sheets in Gold.  With the gold face up, use your finger and apply pressure to the foil.

BTS Project 14

Remove the transfer sheet and you have a golden sun and bell.  To complete the pouch, trim your design to 6 1/2″ wide by 8 1/2″ tall.  Take you charm pack or other fabrics and make 58 2 1/2″ squares.  This pouch was made with Hometown Girl by Pat Sloan from Moda.

Next make 10 set of 5 – 2 1/2″ squares. I prefer to arrange them prior to sewing them.  Making sure not to have the same fabrics touching each other.  Sew two of the strips to the top of the embroidered design.  The rest are for the back of you pouch.  Sew them together.

BTS Project 8

After completing that step, it is time to quilt it up.  Using StitchnSew Sew-In High Loft Fleece, machine or hand quilt.  This project has a mixture of both.

BTS Project 6

After quilting the front and back, trim if necessary.  With a coordinating fabric, cut 2 rectangles 10 1/2″ x  14 1/2″ for the lining.  With right sides together, sew around the sides and bottom of the lining.  Leave the top open.  Repeat this for your quilted front and back.  Line up the squares on the side of your bag, creating a seamless look.

Turn your quilted piece right side out.  Attach a button on the back of your bag, fourth square down in the center.

BTS Project 4

Cut a piece of ribbon, approximately 5 inches long.  Make a loop.  Pin the loop to the top center of the front of your quilted bag.  Make sure that the ribbon will easily go over your button.  If it is a smaller button, make the loop smaller.

BTS Project 3

Next, place your lining over the top of your quilted bag.  Pin the top edges together.  Sew around the bag, leaving an opening wide enough to turn your piece. Turn your piece right side out.

BTS Project 2

Next, insert the lining and iron.  This makes a crisp edge to topstitch.  Fold over the seam allowance for the section that was left unsewn to turn.  After ironing, topstitch around the top edge of your bag.  Make sure to sew your loop upwards.

And there you have a Back to School I-Pad pouch for yourself or a lucky teacher in your life. I hope to see many adorable pouches out there and I would love for you to stop into my blog at Sew Incredibly Crazy. ~Amy
