Hello! Summer is over and my kids are back at school! One of my kids goals this school year is to stay organized. I made a sweet little pouch to store all my daughters’ little essentials all in one convenient pouch. It holds her wipes and tissue, chapstick, and her braces cleaning kit. The clear back cover holds her student ID which is easily accessible using clear vinyl to scan and has an easy open slot to take it in out as necessary.
ACCESIBLE POUCH INSTRUCTIONS
Materials Needed:
- One fat quarter of cotton
- HeatnBond Fusible Fleece
- SpraynBond Basting Adhesive Fabric Spray
- 1 Nylon zipper – At least 7″ or more. I used 9″ for this project (they will be cut to size so I prefer nylon zippers which are easy to cut and less bulky).

Tools Needed:
- Sewing Machine
- Rotary Cutter and Mat
- Ruler
- Iron – I love Oliso!
- Erasable Marking Pen
Cutting
- Cut two 11″ x 7″ cotton rectangles for the body
- Cut two 11″ x 7″ HeatnBond Fusible Fleece rectangle for the body
- Cut two 6″ x 2 1/4″ clear vinyl rectangles for the outer pocket
- Cut three 6″ x 2 1/2″ binding pieces for the zipper and outer pocket
- Cut two 6 1/2″ x 3″ binding pieces for the sides
Tips
- Use a 3/8″ seam allowance unless noted otherwise, basting uses a 1/8″ seam allowance
- Follow the instructions for HeatnBond Fusible Fleece as directed
- Follow the instructions forSpraynBond Fusible Adhesive Fabric Spray as directed
- When sewing with the vinyl, place a scrap piece of paper underneath the edge of the foot (but not directly under the needle) to prevent sticking
- Use a scrap piece of paper under your fabrics when spraying
Let’s Begin!
Prep your Binding Pieces
- Take the three 6″ x 2 1/2″ binding piece for the zipper and outer pocket and fold in half lengthwise. Press with an iron. Repeat for the two 6″ x 3″ binding pieces for the sides. Set the binding pieces aside and proceed with the body.

Make the Body
- To make the outer body, adhere an 11″ x 7″ HeatnBond fusible fleece to an 11″ x 7″ cotton rectangle. Use the directions on the package as indicated.

- Spray the backside of the fleece with SprayNBond basting adhesive and adhere the second 11″ x 7″ cotton piece.
- Quilt as desired and trim the piece to 10″ x 6″.

Make the Outer Vinyl Pocket
- With the raw edges facing downwards, place a prepped 6″ x 2 1/2″ binding piece on the bottom area of a 6″ x 2 1/4″ vinyl rectangle. Clip in place and sew using a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- Turn the folded edge to the other side of the vinyl. Clip in place and edgestitch close to the folded seam. Set aside.
- Take the second 6″ x 2 1/4″ vinyl rectangle and align to the top of the body. Clip in place and baste.
- Take the binded 6″ x 2 1/4″ vinyl rectangle and line up to the bottom of the basted vinyl rectangle on the body. Clip in place and baste the sides. TIP: Place a piece of paper underneath sewing foot as indicated in the TIPS information in the beginning. Sew a seam on the bottom binded edge to secure in place. You should now have an opening for the vinyl pocket.
- With the raw edge facing up, attach a prepped 6″ x 2 1/2″ binding piece to the top of the body. Clip in place and sew using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

- Follow the same steps from step 2 to complete the binding.
- Repeat for the bottom of the body (make sure to use a prepped 6″ x 2 1/4″ binding).

Add the Zipper
- Open the zipper and center along the bodies top binding to the bottom zipper area right along the bottom area of the zipper. Clip in place and edgestitch along the top binding.

- Close the zipper and mark the body placement onto the top area of the zipper (this is where the bottom body will be placed).
- Open the zipper and take the bottom of the body and line up to the marked areas of the top zipper. Clip in place and edgestitch in place.

- Move the zipper towards the middle and sew a seam on each side so the zipper doesn’t come off when trimming the sides of the zipper. This is very IMPORTANT and do not skip this step!
- Trim the excess zipper sides.
Add the Side Bindings
- Take a prepped 6″ x 3″ binding piece and align the raw edge to backside of the body (the vinyl side), centering the binding. You should have about a 3/8 overhang on each side of the binding. Clip in place and sew starting 3/8″ from the start (make sure to backstitch) and stop once you get 3/8″ from the end (also backstitching here) using a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- Now, you will essentially, miter the corners here). Turn the sides top edge to the other side of the zipper area. Pin in place and sew a 3/8″ seam along the small folded area.
- Turn the folded binding over to the other side of the pouch. Clip in place and edgestitch along the folded seam. Once you get to the other corner, repeat the mitering method from the previous step.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other side. You are now done!
