Hi everyone, it’s Amy from During Quiet Time here today to share a tutorial for this cute Flip Flop Beach Bag that is fully lined with vinyl so that it is perfect for toting your wet towel and bathing suit. I love the practical/cute combo!
Let’s start by gathering our supplies. You will need:
a Teflon presser foot
HeatnBond® Fusible Fleece
HeatnBond® Shirt Weight Fusible Interfacing
HeatnBond® Iron on Vinyl
3/4 yard exterior fabric
1/2 yard lining fabric
Flip Flop Paper Pieced Pattern
To begin, paper piece the flip flop. You can find the pattern for the 10″ finished flip flop block in my Etsy shop for immediate download (see link above).
Next, add a contrasting border around the flip flop block. Cut the strip 1″ wide. Next, add the exterior fabric borders which should measure 3 1/4″ wide. You should end up with a finished bag front measuring 17″ square.
Cut the bag back exterior fabric, two lining fabric pieces, and two fusible fleece pieces all to 17″ square. Fuse the fusible fleece to the back of the exterior bag front and back. Iron on the vinyl to the lining pieces. If desired, you can quilt the bag front and back but it is not necessary.
With bag exterior front and back right sides together, stitch around the bag sides and bottom leaving the top open. Do the same with the vinyl covered lining pieces but leave an opening in the center bottom for turning.
It is time to create gussets on the two corners of the bag exterior and the two corners of the bag lining. Make a line 1 1/4″ from the corner of the bag. Cut along this line and then stitch the gusset.
Set the bag pieces aside for a moment to work on the handles. Cut one strip of fabric 4″ wide x the width of the fabric. Cut a 2″ wide strip of the shirt weight interfacing and fuse to the center of the fabric strip. Iron the strip in half and then bring the outer edges into the center crease and iron again. You will have a 1″ wide handle strap. Edge stitch along both long sides of the strap.
Cut the long strap into two 21″ straps.
Pin and baste the handle straps to the bag front and back about 3 1/2″ from the side seams.
With right sides together, place the bag into the lining and stitch around the upper edge. Turn the bag through the opening in the bottom of the lining. Hand stitch lining opening closed.
At this point, you will need a Teflon presser foot because you will be sewing on directly on the vinyl. If you do not have the proper presser foot, you presser foot will stick to the vinyl rather than glide along the surface. Because you cannot iron the vinyl, simply finger press the upper edge of the bag as you top stitch around it.
And there you go! You have a proper beach tote–cute and functional!

I don’t have a favorite but I do tend to wear a few pairs more often than others. I love the pattern and can’t wait to make the paper piece flip flop block into a wonderful gift for my daughter.
